Berlingo diesel or petrol, 2000 to 2024: which gearbox for your engine and generation?

The answer largely depends on the engine code stamped on the block, as two Berlingos with the same engine capacity may require incompatible gearboxes depending on the generation. The 1.6 HDi is the most common case: it can be paired with a 5-speed manual or with the ETG6 automated manual, and the two transmissions are not interchangeable.

1.6 HDi, ETG6 and manuals: the key point to watch

The 1.6 HDi accounts for the majority of references in this collection, with engine codes ranging from 9HX to 9HF, including 9HZ, 9HW and 9HP. Before ordering, it is essential to distinguish versions fitted with the ETG6 — a single-clutch automated manual gearbox — from those with a conventional manual. The ETG6 is sold without the actuator or robot unit: these electronic components are handled separately. Codes HN05 and HNS cover the 1.5 HDi introduced on the third-generation Berlingo, paired with a 6-speed manual (DV5RC, DV5RCF).

Older diesels and petrol: 1.9 HDi, 2.0 HDi and 1.2 PureTech

Berlingos built before 2008 were fitted with the 1.9 HDi (RHY) and the 2.0 HDi (RHZ, WJZ, WJY), both paired with a 5-speed manual and with no automated variant. These gearboxes are similar in size but differ internally in their gear ratios: the engine output determines the exact reference required. On the petrol side, the naturally aspirated 1.6 (NFU / TU5JP4) takes a 5-speed manual, while the 1.2 PureTech — the engine used in the current generation — moves up to 6 speeds. Two reconditioning options are available depending on the condition of the original unit: exchange or full rebuild of the customer's own unit.
