Berlingo 1.6 HDi: two gearbox families for five engine codes, manual or ETG6

On the 1.6 HDi Berlingo (2005–2018), the transmission depends on a parameter that is often overlooked: the engine code stamped on the block. Five codes coexist — 9HX, 9HZ, 9HW, 9HP and 9HF — and they do not all take the same gearbox. The 5-speed manual covers the majority of the range, whilst the ETG6 (6-speed automated manual gearbox) is fitted to only some configurations. Checking this code before ordering avoids mismatching errors.

ETG6: automated manual gearbox supplied without its actuator

The ETG6 is an automated manual gearbox with electrohydraulic control. The unit is supplied without the robot or actuator: this electronic component is specific to each vehicle and must be recovered from the old unit or dealt with separately. This is a structural point, not an option.

When rebuilding your own unit is the right solution

Some gearboxes within this range, particularly the ETG6, are becoming increasingly scarce.
