8HS or FHZ: two engine codes, one 5-speed manual gearbox on the Nemo

On the Citroën Nemo (2008–2018), the transmission is exclusively a 5-speed manual, but the engine code stamped on the block is the key to identifying the exact part. The 1.4 HDi carries the code 8HS; the 1.3 HDi comes in three codes: 199A9000, F13DTE5 and FHZ. This last point is a common pitfall: the two engine capacities are close and the vehicle is compact, but the gearboxes associated with each are not interchangeable. Checking the engine code before placing any order avoids a reference error.

1.4 HDi (8HS) and 1.3 HDi (199A9000 / F13DTE5 / FHZ): what sets them apart

The 1.4 HDi with code 8HS is the original engine fitted to the Nemo at its launch in 2008. The 1.3 HDi, introduced gradually, covers several variants depending on the year of production and the market: the codes 199A9000, F13DTE5 and FHZ correspond to successive developments of the same 1.3 block. The 5-speed gearbox paired with the 1.3 HDi is not the same as the one used on the 1.4 HDi: the casings, ratios and mountings all differ. The weight of available references reflects this reality: the majority of parts in the range cover the 1.4 HDi, while the 1.3 HDi remains harder to source.

Light commercial use and gearbox stress

The Nemo is a light van frequently used in urban environments with repeated loading. This usage profile places particular strain on the lower-gear synchromesh rings and the gear-selection mechanism. On the 1.4 HDi, difficulty engaging the lower gears after heavy use is a well-known symptom.
