Reconditioned Citroën C4 Cactus Gearbox

The C4 Cactus is a city car built for mixed use: its gearbox handles both stop-start urban traffic and regular motorway runs with equal ease.

Designed for versatile everyday use, the C4 Cactus combines driving conditions that place intense demands on the transmission: frequent cold starts in town, prolonged crawling in heavy traffic, and then sustained higher revs on fast roads. This mixed-use profile is precisely what accelerates synchroniser wear on manual gearboxes and weakens the actuator on the ETG6 automated gearbox. Before searching for the right part, you must first identify the transmission fitted to your vehicle, as the C4 Cactus (2014–2018) was equipped with three distinct gearbox types depending on the engine.

1.6 HDi: 5-speed manual or ETG6 – a critical distinction

The 1.6 HDi diesel unit, identified by engine codes 9HP and BHY, was paired with two radically different transmissions depending on the model year and trim level: a 5-speed manual or the ETG6 automated gearbox. These two gearboxes are not interchangeable and do not share the same failure symptoms. The manual typically presents as difficult gear changes or jumping out of gear; the ETG6, often mistaken for a clutch problem, produces juddering during slow urban driving and misfires on downshifts. The ETG6 is sold without the robot (electrohydraulic actuator), which is a separate reference.

1.2 PureTech: one gearbox, three possible engine codes

The 1.2 PureTech petrol engine is fitted exclusively with a 6-speed manual. Three engine codes cover this engine variant over the period: EB2F, EB2DT and EB2ADTS. Checking the engine code stamped on the block before placing any order is essential: despite sharing the same engine capacity, variants of this three-cylinder do not necessarily use the same physical gearbox. The engine code can be found on the V5C registration document (section P.5) or directly on the engine casing.
