C4 Cactus gearbox: manual or ETG6 – which did your vehicle have between 2014 and 2018?

The answer depends on both the engine and the year. The 1.6 HDi is the only C4 Cactus engine to have been offered with two distinct gearbox families — a 5-speed manual and an ETG6 automated manual — whereas the 1.2 PureTech petrol received only the 6-speed manual.

1.6 HDi: 5-speed manual or ETG6 – a fundamental design difference

The 1.6 HDi covers the bulk of the range, with engine codes spread across 9HP, BHY and other variants depending on power output and Euro emissions standard. The 5-speed manual and the ETG6 share no components whatsoever: they are two entirely different architectures. The ETG6 is a single-clutch automated manual gearbox — it is supplied without the actuator (robot unit); only the mechanical gearbox itself is covered. Mixing up the two families results in complete incompatibility, regardless of the engine capacity shown.

1.2 PureTech and identification by engine code

The 1.2 PureTech (engine codes EB2F, EB2DT, EB2ADTS) was fitted with only a 6-speed manual on this generation of the C4 Cactus. Identifying the gearbox by the "1.2" designation alone is not sufficient: the engine codes distinguish between turbocharged and naturally aspirated variants whose gearbox pairings differ. Checking the code stamped on the engine remains the reliable approach before placing any order, particularly for vehicles produced early in the run (2014–2015), where the nomenclature evolved during production.
