A Micra or a Note endures short urban cycles, repeated clutch engagement and slow gear changes under high thermal load. At the other extreme, a Patrol, a Navara or a Cabstar is put to work towing, carrying heavy payloads or driving off-road, with mechanical stresses in a completely different league. In between, the Qashqai, the Juke and the X-Trail combine motorway driving, spirited use and, in certain versions, the automated Quickshift dual-clutch gearbox — a transmission absent from the NV200, NV300, NV400, Primastar and Interstar vans, which are fitted exclusively with 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes. The vehicle's use is therefore the first criterion to establish before identifying the exact reference.

Engine families and identification pitfalls across the Nissan range

This guide covers vehicles produced from 1988 to 2024, with around fifteen distinct engine variants. On the diesel side, the K9K (1.5 dCi, several variants: K9K282, K9K430, K9K636), M9T (2.3 dCi, available as M9T670, M9T700, M9T702, M9T870, M9T890, M9T898) and YD25DDTi (2.5 dCi) are the most common. The same 1.5 dCi on a Qashqai may be paired with a different gearbox depending on the model year and market; the engine code stamped on the block is essential for matching the correct reference. On the petrol side, the HR12DDT / HRA2DDT (1.2 Turbo, recent Juke and Micra), MR16DDT (1.6 Turbo, Juke) and HR16DE (1.6 naturally aspirated) are paired with either 6-speed manual gearboxes or the Quickshift, with no interchangeability between the two types.

Quickshift: what Nissan's dual-clutch gearbox involves

The Quickshift is fitted primarily to the Qashqai and the 1.6 Turbo petrol Juke (MR16DDT). Like all dual-clutch transmissions, it is supplied with a new dual clutch but without the mechatronic unit — this electronic module is handled separately and is never included. The 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes cover the bulk of the range: NV400 and Primastar vans in 2.3 dCi (M9T), Cabstar in 2.8 dCi, Navara and Pathfinder in 2.5 dCi (YD25DDTi), X-Trail and Terrano in 2.2 dCi or 2.0 dCi. For older models — Patrol RD28 or ZD30, Primera F9Q — the engine code remains the only reliable way to avoid a reference error when ordering a reconditioned gearbox on an exchange basis.
