11 Mazda models covered, two sales options: how to choose the right one

From the Mazda 2 to the BT-50, via the RX-8 and its specific engine codes, reconditioned Mazda gearboxes sold on an exchange basis cover a range spanning 1998 to 2021, exclusively in 5- or 6-speed manual. The sales option depends primarily on parts availability and the rarity of the vehicle. For common models such as the Mazda 3 or Mazda 6, an exchange is generally possible. For a rare model or an uncommon engine variant — the RX-8 with its rotary unit 13B-MSP being the clearest example — rebuilding your own gearbox makes sense: it removes the uncertainty of an exchange on a vehicle whose gearbox is not interchangeable with others.

MZR-CD and SkyActiv-D diesel families: engine codes that cannot be substituted for one another

Mazda's diesel range is built around several distinct families. The 1.6 MZR-CD (codes Y6, Y601, Y650, Y655) is fitted mainly to the Mazda 3 and Mazda 5, but the code variants correspond to engine evolutions that do not share the same gearbox. The 2.2 MZR-CD (R2AA, SH, SHY1, SHY4) is found on the Mazda 6 and CX-7, again with code variants that determine which gearbox is compatible. The 2.5 MZR-CD (WL, WL-C, WLAA, WLT) applies to the B2500 and BT-50: a pick-up whose gearbox is not interchangeable with that of the saloons. Finally, the 2.2 SkyActiv-D (SH-VPTS) and the 1.5 SkyActiv-D (S5-DPTR, S5-DPTS 105hp) represent the next generation, found on the CX-5 and CX-3, with an architecture that differs from the MZR-CD units.

Petrol: from the naturally aspirated 1.6 to the turbocharged 2.3 DISI — gearboxes with nothing in common

On the petrol side, the 1.6 (B6ZE) and the 2.0 (LF-VE, PE-VPS) cover the majority of naturally aspirated Mazda 3, MX-5 and Mazda 6 models. The turbocharged 2.3 DISI (L3-VDT) is fitted to the Mazda 3 MPS and the CX-7: the gearbox associated with this engine is specific to it and must not be confused with that of the naturally aspirated 2.0. To identify the correct compatible reconditioned gearbox, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference — the model and year alone are not sufficient, particularly on the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6, which have spanned several generations with distinct engine variants.
