13 turbocharged Ford models: recurring faults to know before replacing your turbo

Across the Ford range, the turbo is one of the most heavily worked components — and one of the most vulnerable. TDCi units, whether the 1.8, 2.0 or 2.2, are well known for accumulating soot in the oil circuit when service intervals are exceeded or the oil degrades prematurely. The result: turbo bearings wear through lack of lubrication, the turbine loses its seal, and symptoms build up gradually — blue exhaust smoke, abnormal whistling, a marked loss of power, or the engine going into limp mode. On Transit models fitted with the 2.2 TDCi (codes CYFA, CYFB, DRFA, DRFB and their variants) or the 3.2 TDCi (codes ENSA, SAFA), heavy load use makes this worse. Replacing the turbo without addressing the root cause — a clogged oil circuit, a blocked diesel particulate filter, or an air leak on the intake — is simply condemning the new part to fail within months.

EcoBoost and EcoBlue: fixed-geometry petrol architectures very different from the TDCi

EcoBoost petrol engines (1.5, 1.6 and 2.0) have a distinct failure profile: the fixed-geometry turbo is particularly susceptible to thermal shock when the engine is switched off immediately after hard use, without allowing the oil circuit to cool down. On the 2.0 EcoBoost ST (code R9DA) or the 203 and 240 hp versions (codes TNCA, TNCB, R9CD, R9CI, TPWA…), a faulty actuator or a seized wastegate results in intermittent overboost and erratic rev spikes. The 2.0 EcoBlue, found notably on recent Focus, Kuga and Transit models (codes BCFA to BCFD, BJFA to BJFD, BKFA among others), shares the TDCi's sensitivity to EGR fouling, but its more modern design makes it more tolerant of oil pressure variations.

Identifying the correct reference: the engine code is essential

On a single model such as the Mondeo or the Galaxy, several power outputs exist for the same engine capacity — for example the 2.0 TDCi available in 115, 130, 136 and 140 hp versions — and the turbos are not interchangeable across all these variants. The Transit, the most represented model in this collection with more than twenty references, spans generations ranging from the 2.4 Di (codes D2FA, D4FA, DOFA…) right through to the current 2.0 EcoBlue. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable guide for navigating between these families and avoiding a reference error. The collection also covers less common engines such as the 3.2 TDCi from the Ranger and the 2.0 EcoBoost from the Mustang, whose reconditioned turbos are available on an exchange basis, while certain references are offered new, as a straightforward sale.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
