Isuzu diesel workhorses put their turbo under far greater strain than the turbos found in ordinary saloon cars

D-Max, Trooper, Rodeo: these vehicles are used for heavy towing, off-road driving, and sometimes as converted motorhomes or in intensive agricultural work. The turbo runs at full load far more often than on a road-going SUV. Sudden temperature spikes, oil degraded by short-run cycles, accelerated EGR fouling on the 3.0 TD — the causes of failure are well known and directly linked to this type of use. Before fitting a new turbo, it is essential to address the root cause: an upstream oil leak, a fouled lubrication circuit, or a blocked diesel particulate filter will destroy a new unit within a few thousand kilometres.

Identify the exact engine block before selecting the reference

The majority of turbos in this collection relate to the 4JJ1 block and its variants, but the exact engine code determines the correct turbo reference. The 3.0 TD 4JJ1 (code 4JJ1) and the 3.0 DiTD, 3.0 DDI and 3.0 D engines all share the code 4JJ1-TC or 4JJ1T — distinct reference families despite an identical engine capacity. The 2.8 TD uses the codes 4JB1-T, 4JB1-TC or 4JB1TC, and the 2.5 TD 136 hp uses the code 4JA1-L. Checking the engine code stamped on the block — not just the engine capacity or power output — is the only way to avoid a reference error on these vehicles.

New turbos, variable geometry and manufacturer references

All turbos listed here are new, sold as direct sale with no unit exchange required. The variable-geometry units fitted to 4JJ1 blocks are particularly susceptible to vane fouling in the distributor, a common symptom on D-Max vehicles used on short urban runs. Isuzu manufacturer references (898… and 897… series) as well as approved equivalent references are listed on each product page. On both the Trooper and the Rodeo, the exact reference also depends on the year of production: the same model may have been fitted with several different turbo versions depending on the model year.
