Toyota diesel turbos rarely fail without reason: what the symptoms reveal

On Toyota D-4D and D-CAT engines, turbo failure is almost always the consequence of an upstream problem rather than a spontaneous breakdown. The 1KD-FTV (3.0 D-4D, fitted to the Land Cruiser and Hilux) and 2KD-FTV (2.5 D-4D, Hilux, Hiace, Previa) families are particularly prone to oil-passage fouling: the variable-geometry turbo loses mobility, the vanes in the cartridge seize, and the engine enters limp mode with a marked loss of power. On the 2AD-FHV / 2AD-FTV (2.2 D-4D and D-CAT, Avensis, Auris, RAV4, Verso), EGR circuit fouling accelerates CHRA degradation; persistent blue smoke when hot and an abnormal whistling noise are the first warning signs. In both cases, fitting a reconditioned turbo without addressing the root cause — oil quality, filter condition, EGR or DPF fouling — will invariably result in another failure.

Identifying the correct reference: the engine code is essential

Engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the turbo. The 2.5 D-4D covers several power outputs (102, 120 and 144 hp), all linked to the engine code 2KD-FTV, but the associated turbo references differ depending on the exact variant and market. Likewise, the 2.2 receives — depending on the variant (136, 150 or 177 hp, D-4D or D-CAT) — either the code 2AD-FTV or 2AD-FHV, with turbos that are not interchangeable. On the Land Cruiser 200, the V8 diesel 1VD-FTV uses a twin-turbo configuration: each turbo is referenced separately. For the 1.4 D-4D found in city cars (1ND-TV), Toyota OEM references (17201-…) and their equivalents must be cross-checked against the production date to avoid any errors. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable guide for selecting the correct reference.

Petrol and diesel: two different approaches in this catalogue

The vast majority of turbos in this collection are for D-4D and D-CAT diesel engines. Petrol references are limited to the 8NR-FTS (1.2 Turbo 116 hp, C-HR, Auris, Yaris) and, on the Aygo, the codes EB2ADT / EB2ADTS shared with PSA. On these petrol engines with fixed-geometry turbos, the causes of failure differ: foreign body ingestion, a faulty oil seal, or degraded oil are the most common factors. Some references are available as a new turbo, others as a reconditioned turbo on an exchange basis — full details are given on each product page.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Toyota.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Toyota?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
