New or reconditioned turbo: two realities depending on the Peugeot engine

Across the Peugeot range, the choice between a new turbo and a reconditioned turbo is not purely a matter of budget: it depends first and foremost on what reference is available for that specific engine. Certain references — particularly on older diesel blocks such as the DW10TD, RHY or RHV fitted to the 206, 307 and 406 of the previous generation — are no longer manufactured new; a reconditioned exchange unit then becomes the only reliable option. Conversely, turbos for more recent blocks (1.5 BlueHDi codes DV5RC, DV5RD, DV5RE or 1.2 PureTech codes HNP, HNS, HNV, HNY, HNZ) are often available new, sold outright with no old unit to return.

Having your own unit rebuilt makes sense in one specific situation: when the turbo is rare, when the vehicle has heritage value, or when the customer wants to get back exactly their original part reconditioned — this is particularly relevant for the 2.8 HDi (S9W700, S9W702) found in the 807 or the Boxer, whose turbos are not widely available on the market.

Peugeot engine families and their turbos: diesel, petrol, light commercial vehicles

The range covers around twenty models, from city cars (106, 107, 206, 207, 208) to MPVs (807, 5008) and light commercial vehicles (Boxer, Expert, Partner, Rifter, Bipper). On the diesel side, three generations coexist: the older DW10 and RH units (2.0 HDi 90, 110, 136, 163 hp), the DV6 in 1.6 HDi (codes 9HS, 9HV, 9HX, 9HY, 9HZ for the 90 and 110 hp versions; 9HC, 9HD, BHX, BHZ for the 115 and 120 hp versions), then the DV5 in 1.5 BlueHDi. On the petrol side, the 1.6 THP covers codes 5FA, 5FE, EP6CDT, EP6FDT and variants depending on output (150, 156, 163, 165 hp), whilst the 1.2 PureTech/THP covers codes HNP through to HNZ.

A common pitfall: on the 1.6 HDi, codes DV6ATED4, DV6B and DV6UTED4 correspond to the 75 and 90 hp versions, whilst DV6TED4B and DV6TED4BU cover the 90 and 92 hp versions — these are distinct turbos despite an identical engine capacity. Likewise, on the 1.6 THP, the EP6CDT and EP6FDT variants do not share the same turbo. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference to avoid ordering the wrong part.

Symptoms and causes of failure to identify before replacement

On Peugeot engines, turbo failures are often the result of a blocked oil circuit (EGR, clogged DPF) or degraded oil that has destroyed the bearings. The classic symptoms — blue or black exhaust smoke, abnormal whistling, loss of power, limp-home mode — are not enough on their own to pinpoint the cause. Fitting a new or reconditioned turbo without addressing the root cause (oil pressure, intake hose integrity, lubrication quality) risks a rapid recurrence. This preliminary diagnosis is essential to the longevity of the part, regardless of its origin.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Peugeot.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Peugeot?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
