Are all Iveco Daily turbos diesel, and does that really affect the nature of the turbo?

The answer is yes: every unit covered here is diesel. There are no petrol engines in this catalogue, and that has a direct bearing on the technology used in these turbos. Diesel means high exhaust temperatures, sustained boost pressure, and — on more recent generations — almost universal use of variable geometry (VGT). Older units — the 8140 family in 2.5 TD, 2.8 TD and 2.8 D — used fixed-geometry turbos with a mechanical wastegate: more robust, but less responsive. The F1A and F1C generations, fitted to the Daily from the 2.3 D and 3.0 HPI/HPT/D onwards, switched to variable-geometry turbos: the turbine vanes continuously adjust the gas flow cross-section, which multiplies the potential failure points (seized vanes, actuator out of range, excessive shaft play).

Engine families and identifying the right turbo

Two main engine code families make up this collection. The first covers the 8140 (8140.23, 8140.27, 8140.43 and their variants): these span the 2.5 TD, 2.8 D and 2.8 TD across a wide power range (90 to 122 hp). The same code — such as 8140.23 — can appear across several power outputs; the manufacturer's turbo reference then depends on the exact model year and cylinder head version. The second family brings together the F1A and F1C codes: the F1A units (F1AE0481x, F1AE3481x, F1AFL411x, F1AGL411x) cover the 2.3 D from 95 to 156 hp, while the F1C units (F1CE0481x, F1CFL411F, F1CE3481x) are fitted to the 3.0 HPI, 3.0 HPT and 3.0 D up to 205 hp. At similar power outputs, two distinct F1A codes can take different turbos: the CHRA, turbine wheel geometry and actuator are not identical from one revision to the next. The engine code stamped on the block and the OEM reference of the original turbo remain the only two reliable identification points.

Causes of failure and checks to carry out before replacement

On the Daily, turbo failures follow recurring patterns: insufficient lubrication at start-up (degraded oil or a blocked oil return line), fouling caused by the EGR circuit or a clogged DPF saturating the exhaust gases, and ingestion of foreign objects on the intake side. The usual symptoms are persistent blue smoke, a whistling noise under acceleration, a noticeable loss of power, or the vehicle entering limp mode. Replacing the turbo without addressing the root cause — a clogged oil filter, a faulty oil line seal, a failing EGR — will inevitably lead to premature failure of the new or reconditioned unit. This preliminary check is non-negotiable. The turbos listed here are available either new (direct sale, no old unit to return) or reconditioned, depending on the reference.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your IVECO.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my IVECO?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
