Opel Turbo: does it really make a difference whether it's a city car with high mileage or a heavily loaded van?

Yes, usage matters. A Combo or Vivaro doing repeated short urban runs will clog its oil circuit far more quickly than an Insignia driven mainly on motorways. A Meriva used as a second car — frequently started from cold and switched off before the oil has had time to circulate properly through the bearings — will show worn turbos at mileages that might otherwise seem perfectly reasonable. A Mokka or Crossland driven in mixed conditions with periods of high revs followed by an abrupt engine cut-off creates the classic conditions for oil coking inside the CHRA. Before fitting a new or reconditioned turbo, it is therefore essential to identify and address the root cause — oil quality or level, EGR fouling, a blocked diesel particulate filter, an air leak on the intake — otherwise the new unit will suffer the same fate.

Opel engine families: identification pitfalls you need to know

The Opel turbodiesel range is built around several engine families that evolved over long periods, which means a large number of variants exist for the same engine capacity. On the 1.7 diesel, the progression runs from the Y17DT (DTI 75 hp version) through the Z17DT and Z17DTH (100–101 hp), then to the A17DTJ and A17DTR (110–125 hp): these codes correspond to different, non-interchangeable turbos fitted to the Astra, Corsa, Zafira or Meriva depending on the year. A 1.7 CDTI 100 hp carrying the code Z17DT does not take the same turbo as a 1.7 CDTI 125 hp A17DTR, even though the engine capacity is identical.

The 1.3 CDTI found on the Corsa and Meriva comes in several variants: Z13DT, Z13DTJ, Z13DTH, Z13DTE, A13DTE, B13DTC, B13DTN depending on output (69 to 95 hp) and generation. The 1.6 CDTI fitted to the Astra, Insignia or Mokka is available as B16DTC, B16DTE, B16DTH, B16DTJ, B16DTL, B16DTN, B16DTU, D16DTH, D16DTJ, A16DTH depending on output (95 to 136 hp) and vehicle generation. The 1.9 CDTI found in the Astra H and Vectra C (codes Z19DT, Z19DTL for 100–120 hp; Z19DTH, Z19DTJ for 120–150 hp) also uses different turbos depending on the power output. In every case, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference for identifying the correct turbo.

Petrol engines and vans: the other engine types covered

On the petrol side, the 1.6 Turbo (Z16LET, A16LET) is fitted to the Astra G OPC and Astra H, with fixed-geometry wastegate turbos whose actuators tend to deteriorate over time. The 1.6 SIDI Turbo (codes A16SHT, A16XHT, B16SHL, B16SHT, 170–200 hp) is fitted to the Astra J and Insignia; the 1.4 Turbo (A14NEL, A14NET, B14NEL, 120–140 hp) is fitted to the Corsa, Astra and Mokka. For vans, the Vivaro and Movano are covered: depending on the generation, the Vivaro may use F9Q blocks (Renault), while the Movano is fitted with the 2.3 CDTI (code M9T, 136 to 170 hp) — a variable-geometry turbo that is sensitive to the EGR fouling commonly seen with this type of intensive use. For all these engines, EDEN BOITES offers new turbos for direct sale and reconditioned turbos on an exchange basis, depending on the reference.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Opel.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Opel?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
