Mercedes Diesel Reliability: Robust Blocks but Families with Well-Documented Weaknesses

The Mercedes diesel engines covered here span 1999 to 2019 and bring together generations with very different reliability profiles. The OM651 block (2.2 CDI and 2.1 CDI, codes 651911 to 651958) is the four-cylinder engine most widely represented in this collection — Vito, Sprinter, Classe C, CLA, GLA, Classe A, Classe B and GLC among others. It is well known for its timing chain stretch and timing failure, a notorious fault that manifests as a metallic noise on cold starts and, over time, as a stall or limp-mode event. A single internal mechanical failure is enough to justify replacing the bare engine rather than carrying out a partial repair.

The 3.0 CDI V6 and Six-Cylinder Engines: A Different Failure Pattern

The OM642 blocks (3.0 CDI and 3.0 CDI V6, codes 642826, 642873, 642890, 642940, 642961, 642990, OM642.930) are fitted to the ML350, GLE, GLC, Classe E, Classe G, GLK and Viano. Their well-known weak point is EGR system failure and cylinder head fragility when the engine overheats. These symptoms — abnormal oil consumption, blue smoke and progressive power loss — frequently lead to a complete engine replacement. The older variants, OM617 (3.0 D) and OM602 (2.9 CDI), found on vehicles from as early as 1999, are mechanically simpler but difficult to source.

Identifying the Right Block Precisely: the OM651 Code Trap

Within the 2.2 CDI range alone, codes vary as widely as 611987, 646980, 646982, 646984, 646986, OM646.985 and the entire OM651.921, OM651.924, OM651.940 series. These codes are not interchangeable: the exact code is determined by the power output, year of manufacture and vehicle model. On the Vito and Sprinter in particular, several codes coexist depending on the chassis generation. The 2.0 CDI OM654.920 (Classe C, GLC post-2015) is a distinct, more recent engine family and must not be confused with the OM651 range. All engines listed are reconditioned bare engines sold on an exchange basis or available as a rebuild of your own unit, depending on the reference; the sales method available is specified on each product page.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Mercedes engine cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Mercedes engine compatible with my exact model?

We offer 42 references covering the main Mercedes models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact engine for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original engine rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
