Mercedes Vito Engine 1999 to 2019: four families of diesel blocks across two decades of van

Over twenty years of production, the Vito passed through three generations and as many major technical turning points. In 1999, the W638 was built around the OM611 (code OM611980), a first-generation common rail direct-injection 2.2 CDI. The W639, launched in 2003, broadened the range with the OM646 — two variants coexisted, the OM646980 and OM646982 — and then introduced the V6 3.0 CDI OM642 for top-of-the-range versions. The W447, which arrived in 2014, marked the sharpest break of all: the 2.2 CDI gradually gave way to the 2.1 CDI OM651 (code 651950) and, for the first time on the Vito, to the 1.6 CDI four-cylinder small-capacity unit (code 622951), before the 2.0 CDI OM654 (code 654920) arrived towards the end of the cycle.

Identifying the right engine for your generation

The label "2.2 CDI" covers entirely different engines depending on the generation: the OM611 in the W638 and the OM646 in the W639 share neither architecture nor components. The engine code stamped on the block — not to be confused with the engine capacity alone — is the only reliable reference for avoiding an ordering mistake. On the W447, whether you have the 1.6 CDI or the 2.1 CDI depends on the trim level and model year: two Vitos from the same year can carry engines with nothing whatsoever in common.

Key points to watch for each engine family

The OM611 is well known for EGR valve and turbo problems at high mileage. The OM646 has recurring weaknesses in the cooling circuit and head gaskets. The OM651, a more modern unit, can suffer from cylinder head cracks on vehicles used intensively in heavy commercial service. The 3.0 CDI OM642 (code 642890), a V6 turbodiesel, is the only six-cylinder in the Vito range and must not be confused with any of the four-cylinder units. All engines offered here are bare engines: ancillaries, turbo, injection system and accessories remain those of the original vehicle.
