Mercedes Vito Engine 1999 to 2019: six generations of diesel units for one van

Twenty years separate the first diesel Vito with its naturally aspirated engine from the latest fourth-generation common rail direct injection unit. Over that period, Mercedes updated its engines several times, changing the architecture or engine code each time — sometimes without altering the stated engine capacity. The 108 D 2.3 of the early series (engine code OM 601.942, from 1999 onwards) has no mechanical connection whatsoever with the 2.2 CDI units that followed: they are entirely separate engine families.

The 2.2 CDI at the heart of production: four codes, one engine capacity

The 2.2 CDI engine accounts for the majority of available references, with four different engine codes — OM611980, OM646980, OM646982 and OM 651.940 — corresponding to successive developments across several generations of the Vito. An identical engine capacity is not enough to identify the correct unit: the code stamped on the engine itself remains the only reliable reference. The OM611 and OM646 belong to families that predate the OM651, which was fitted to versions produced from around 2010 onwards. These units are not interchangeable.

1.6 CDI, 2.0 CDI, 2.1 CDI, 3.0 CDI: the additional engines not to mix up

The 2.1 CDI (engine code 651950) and the 2.0 CDI (engine code OM654920) are the most recent variants fitted to the Vito W447, the 2.0 having appeared late in the production cycle. The 1.6 CDI (engine code 622951) was introduced on entry-level versions of the W447. At the other end of the spectrum, the 3.0 CDI (engine code 642890) is a V6 unit reserved for the most powerful configurations. Each code corresponds to its own distinct architecture: confusing a 2.1 with a 2.2 when ordering — because the capacities are close — is a common mistake. Checking the engine code on the vehicle's identification plate or on the engine block itself is essential before making any identification.
