15 Volkswagen models, two fuel types, three decades: what determines the right reconditioned engine

The range covers vehicles produced between 1992 and 2020, from the Polo to the Crafter, including the Touareg and the Amarok. This breadth reflects a concrete reality: at the same engine capacity, an engine may belong to entirely different block families with no shared components, depending on the vehicle's generation. For the 2.0 TDI alone, the catalogue lists more than forty distinct engine codes — AZV, BMM, CFCA, CUPA, DASC and DFGA — each corresponding to a specific configuration. The code stamped at the top of the block, on the gearbox side, is the only reliable identifier.

Exchange or rebuild: when one is the right choice over the other

For the vast majority of references — Golf, Passat, Transporter, Tiguan, Touran — exchange covers the need: a reconditioned bare engine is dispatched and the old unit is returned. Rebuilding your own block makes sense in two specific situations: when the reference is rare or old (LT, New Beetle, certain 2.5 TDI units such as ACV or BJK, Touareg 3.0 TDI codes BPD / BPE), or when the block has a documented characteristic that makes sourcing on an exchange basis uncertain. In these cases, having your own engine reconditioned guarantees that the exact reference is retained.

Diesel and petrol: engine code families that must not be mixed up

On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI (AHF, BKC, BLS…) preceded a highly varied 2.0 TDI generation, which was itself followed by the 1.6 TDI (CAYD, CRKB, CXXB…) on recent compact models. On the petrol side, the 1.8 T 20V (AGU, AUM, AUQ…) is distinct from the 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TSI units that followed: these families share no internal components. A 1.4 TSI with code CAXA and a 1.4 TSI with code CZDA refer to blocks from different generations. Checking the code before placing any order prevents misidentification.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Volkswagen engine cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Volkswagen engine compatible with my exact model?

We offer 178 references covering the main Volkswagen models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact engine for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original engine rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
