Two Mazda diesels, two different engines: the 2.0 MZR-CD and the 2.2 Skyactiv-D are not interchangeable

It's the classic pitfall with Mazda diesels: a 3, a 5, a 6 or a CX-5 may show a similar or identical engine capacity at first glance, yet receive a completely different engine depending on the year and generation of the vehicle. The 2.0 MZR-CD (engine code RF7J), found notably on generations produced from 2005 onwards, shares no components whatsoever with the 2.2 Skyactiv-D (engine code SHY1), which appeared later on the Mazda 6, CX-5, and more recent versions of the 3 and 5 up to 2017. Mixing the two up when placing an order means receiving a bare engine that is incompatible with the vehicle's sump, mountings and timing system.

How to confirm the correct engine for your model

The engine code stamped on the block is the definitive reference for removing any doubt. On Mazda diesels from this period, RF7J identifies the MZR-CD — an older common-rail injection architecture — whereas SHY1 denotes the Skyactiv-D, a lower-compression engine designed to reduce emissions. The two families cover models that sometimes overlap under the same nameplate, most notably the Mazda 6, which was offered with either engine depending on the year of first registration. Checking the engine designation on the V5C (section P5) or on the block itself will prevent any ordering errors.
