IVECO Daily and 35C engines are prone to head gasket and turbo failures

On IVECO light commercial vehicles from 2006 to 2019, engine failures follow recurring, well-documented patterns. The 2.3 TD and the 2.3 HPI frequently suffer blown head gaskets, brought on by tight thermal management and sustained load cycles in professional use. The 2.8 TD (engine codes 8140.43C and 8140.43R), an older unit, develops liner and piston wear that makes partial repair unviable on economic grounds. On the 3.0 Multijet and the 3.0 HPT, turbo oil return issues and EGR circuit fouling lead to internal block contamination that cannot be properly resolved without a full strip-down. In all these cases, replacement with a reconditioned engine is often the only realistic solution.

Identifying the exact engine: engine capacity alone is not enough

The 2.3-litre diesel alone covers three distinct families — 2.3 TD, 2.3 HPI and 2.3 Multijet — with engine codes that are not interchangeable between them. The 2.3 HPI covers codes F1AE0481FA, F1AE0481H and F1AFL411C; the 2.3 Multijet includes F1AE0481B, F1AE0481GA, F1AE3481B, F1AGL411G and F1AGL411L; the 2.3 TD relates solely to the F1AGL411J. These references correspond to internal block revisions that make blocks non-interchangeable between sub-families. The engine code stamped on the block — not simply the engine capacity or the stated power output — is the only reliable reference when ordering the correct bare engine.

Daily or 35C: two models, one essential requirement for accuracy

The range covers fourteen diesel bare engines split between the Daily and the 35C, all sold on an exchange basis. The 2.3 Multijet and 3.0 Multijet engines account for the greatest number of available references. The engine is supplied as a bare unit: ancillaries (turbo, alternator, starter motor, high-pressure pump) must be reused or replaced separately depending on their condition. Before placing any order, the full code stamped on the block must be checked and provided: a single letter's difference between two codes can mean an incompatible version.
