Kia engines changed family significantly between 2002 and 2023

Over two decades, Kia ran several engine generations side by side, with no direct continuity between them. The first Sorento models (from 2002 onwards) were fitted with large-capacity V6 units — G6DA, G6DB, G6DC — based on a petrol architecture ranging from 3.0 to 3.8 litres, which bears no relation to the four-cylinder units that followed. From the 2010s onwards, the range shifted to far more compact engines: the 1.6 GDI (G4FD) in the Sportage and Ceed, the 1.7 CRDi (D4FD) in the Carens, Sportage and Ceed, and the 1.6 T-GDI (G4FJ) in the Pro Ceed. These families are structurally distinct: an incorrectly identified engine code will consistently result in ordering an incompatible part.

Sorento V6: six codes for what appears to be the same engine capacity

The Sorento alone accounts for six references in this collection, reflecting the genuine diversity of V6 units fitted depending on the generation and power output chosen. The codes G6DA, G6DB, G6DC, G6DE, G6DF and G6DG cover engines ranging from 3.0 to 3.8 litres (3.0 V6, 3.3 V6, 3.5 V6, 3.8 V6). Despite their apparent family resemblance, these units are not interchangeable: the exact engine capacity, power output and vehicle generation all determine the correct code. Only the code stamped on the block is definitive.

Four-cylinder engines: the 1.7 CRDi and the 1.6 GDI — two different identification approaches

The D4FD (1.7 CRDi) is found across several models — Carens, Sportage, Ceed — but differences in power output (115 or 136 hp) and production year give rise to different specifications. The D4FE is a distinct variant of the same 1.7 diesel. On the petrol side, the G4FD (1.6 GDI) and the G4FA (1.4 MPI) share a GDI or MPI architecture but have no direct mechanical connection. For every reconditioned bare engine offered here on an exchange basis, only the full engine code — not the engine capacity, not the power output listed in the catalogue — can confirm compatibility.
