4 Hyundai engine codes, two ranges, two reconditioning options: how to find your way

Across the models covered here — Tucson, ix35, Santa Fe and Veloster, from 2001 to 2020 — the reconditioned engines available fall into two distinct ranges: petrol with the 1.6 GDI (code G4FD), and diesel with the 1.7 CRDi (D4FE) and the 2.0 CRDi (D4FD and D4EB). The first thing that guides your choice is the engine code itself: a 2.0 CRDi fitted to a first-generation Tucson does not share the same block as a 2.0 CRDi from an ix35. The code stamped on the engine — D4FD or D4EB — is the only reliable reference that removes any ambiguity; the year and model alone are not enough.

Exchange or rebuild: what block scarcity changes

Most engines in this collection are available on an exchange basis. However, rebuilding the original block — where the unit sent in is reconditioned and then returned to its owner — makes particular sense in two situations: when the block has specific fitment characteristics tied to a modified or prepared vehicle, or when the engine is rare enough that no exchange block is available at the time of the request. The D4EB, fitted to first- and second-generation Santa Fe models, falls into this category: production has ceased and the pool of available exchange blocks is narrower than for the D4FD. In such cases, starting from your own unit eliminates any supply uncertainty.

Key points by engine type

The 1.6 GDI G4FD is fitted to the Veloster and certain versions of the Tucson III: it is a direct petrol injection block, prone to inlet valve carbon build-up — a point worth checking before drawing any conclusions about the condition of the engine in situ. On the diesel side, the 1.7 CRDi D4FE is specific to the ix35: smaller engine capacity, a different block from the 2.0, and not interchangeable with it despite a similar external appearance. All engines listed here are bare engines — ancillaries, turbo and injection system not included — regardless of the sales option chosen.
