Five Hyundai engines, two purchasing options: how to choose between 2001 and 2020

The collection covers engines from five distinct families — 1.6 GDI, 1.6 T-GDI, 1.7 CRDi, 2.0 CRDi and 2.5 TD — fitted to models as varied as the Tucson, Veloster, ix35, Santa Fe and Galloper. This diversity is the first thing to consider: the same model may have been fitted with several different engines depending on the year and market, and the same engine may be used across several models without being strictly identical from one series to the next. Before making any decision, the engine code stamped on the block takes precedence over the engine capacity and the commercial name.

Diesel or petrol: two generations, entirely unrelated engines

On the diesel side, the D4BH (2.5 TD) is fitted to the Galloper, an older-generation 4x4 with indirect injection — a robust engine, but of a very different architecture from the CRDi units that followed. The D4EB (2.0 CRDi) covers the Santa Fe and certain versions of the ix35, while the 1.7 CRDi comes in two distinct codes, D4FD and D4FE, which are not minor variants: they reflect differences in calibration and specification — confusing the two when ordering is a common mistake on the ix35 and Tucson diesel. On the petrol side, the G4FD (1.6 GDI, naturally aspirated direct injection) and the G4FJ (1.6 T-GDI, turbocharged) share the same engine capacity but are entirely different engines: the G4FJ is fitted notably to the Veloster and the turbocharged petrol Tucson from 2016 onwards, and its failure symptoms — abnormal oil consumption, premature piston ring wear — are distinct from those of the naturally aspirated G4FD.

When rebuilding your own unit makes sense

For engines with limited availability — the D4BH from the Galloper being the clearest example in this collection — the exchange option can run into restricted stock. Rebuilding the customer's original engine then becomes the most logical solution: it guarantees that the unit returned is the one approved for the vehicle, with no risk of substitution. For more widely used engines such as the D4EB or G4FD, the exchange route remains the most straightforward option. In all cases, the engine code — G4FJ, D4BH, G4FD, D4EB, D4FD or D4FE — is the essential piece of information to provide in order to confirm compatibility, well before the model or year.
