TFSI petrol and TDI diesel units: two different wear patterns, one identification process that leaves no room for guesswork

The Audi catalogue here covers eleven models — from the A1 to the Q7, spanning 1996 to 2020 — with fourteen distinct engine variants, split between petrol units (TFSI, T 20V, FSI, 1.6 naturally aspirated) and diesel units (TDI in 1.6, 1.9, 2.0, 2.5 V6, 3.0 and 4.2). This variety is the first pitfall: the same model with the same engine capacity can house radically different engine codes depending on the year of first registration and the power output specified at the time of order. On the 2.0 TDI alone, there are 28 distinct codes — from BMM to DGCA — which are not mechanically interchangeable. The same applies on the petrol side: the 2.0 TFSI spans 17 codes (AXX, BPY, CAEB, DJHA…), each corresponding to a specific generation or power variant.

Petrol or diesel: what the engine code stamped on the block tells you

Audi petrol units fall into two distinct families in terms of behaviour. The 1.2 and 1.4 TFSI (codes CBZA, CBZB, CBZC, CZDA, CAXA, CAVG…) are fitted mainly to the compact A1 and A3; they are prone to oil consumption issues and, on certain versions, timing chain problems. The 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI, more widely used across the A3, A4, A5, TT and S3, show different wear histories depending on the generation: the earliest codes (AXX, BPY) date from the mid-2000s, while the latest (CNCD, DJHA) run through to 2020. The 1.8 T 20V (AGU, AJQ, APX, AUM…) is an older family, specific to pre-2005 generations, and shares no components with the TFSI units that succeeded it.

On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI (AVF, AVQ, BRU, BSW…) and its 110 hp variant (AHF) are older units — sound in design but often high-mileage. The 2.0 TDI takes over from 2003 onwards and accounts for the bulk of volume across the A3, A4, A5 and Q5. At the top of the range, the 3.0 TDI (CRTE, CVUB) and the 4.2 TDI (CCFA) power the A6 and Q7; the 2.5 TDI V6 (BCZ) belongs to an earlier generation. For these 6-cylinder and V8 units, rebuilding the customer's own unit is also offered as an alternative to the standard exchange, which can be the right solution when the original block is difficult to source.

Identification by engine code: the only reliable method

Across this entire range, the model and engine capacity alone are not enough to identify the correct reconditioned engine. An Audi A3 2.0 TDI may take a BMM, a CBDA or a CUNA depending on the year and power output — three entirely different blocks. The engine code, stamped directly on the block (typically on the gearbox side), is the only reliable reference before placing any order. Checking this code before selecting a product is the only way to avoid a compatibility issue that would otherwise only come to light during fitting.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Audi engine cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Audi engine compatible with my exact model?

We offer 124 references covering the main Audi models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact engine for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original engine reconditioned in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
