6 engine codes for two TFSI capacities: what sets the Audi A1's engines apart

The Audi A1 (2010–2018) is petrol-only, but that narrow scope conceals a more complex reality: two engine capacities, the 1.2 TFSI and the 1.4 TFSI, span no fewer than six distinct engine codes (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC, CHPB for the 1.2; CAVG, CZDA for the 1.4). The same engine capacity does not mean a single block: depending on the year and variant, internal specifications, torque figures and dimensions differ. Ordering a bare engine based solely on the commercial name is the most common source of error.

CBZA, CBZB, CBZC, CHPB: why the 1.2 TFSI is not a uniform block

The 1.2 TFSI evolved across model years: the codes CBZA, CBZB and CBZC correspond to distinct power outputs or emissions standards, whilst CHPB represents a later revision. These blocks share the same turbocharged three-cylinder inline architecture, but their internal components are not always interchangeable. The engine code, stamped directly onto the block, is the only reliable identifier for confirming compatibility before placing an order.

1.4 TFSI: CAVG or CZDA – two generations with different characteristics

The A1's 1.4 TFSI comes in two engine codes: CAVG, found on the earlier production years, and CZDA, introduced on later model years with ACT technology (cylinder deactivation). These two four-cylinder inline engines are not interchangeable: the CZDA incorporates valve timing and cylinder management mechanisms that are absent from the CAVG. Checking whether or not the original vehicle is fitted with ACT is essential before any substitution. Engines are supplied as bare units, without ancillaries.
