An engine for the Audi TT: what are the constraints of its sporting use?

The Audi TT is a coupé or roadster designed for sporting use, regularly driven at high engine speeds. This kind of use accelerates wear on the piston rings, valve guides and bearing caps — particularly on the 2.0 TFSI direct-injection units, which are known to be susceptible to oil dilution and carbon deposits at the intake valves. Replacing a bare engine on this model therefore requires the engine code to be identified precisely before placing any order.

Three petrol engines, five engine codes to distinguish

The range covers the 1.4 TFSI, 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI blocks. The latter is by far the most common, with three distinct engine codes: CDLB, CDAA and APX. The 1.8 TFSI comes in CHHB and CHHA, while the 1.4 TFSI corresponds to a specific code. These variants are not mechanically interchangeable: the cylinder head, sump, sensor locations and mounting points can all differ between codes even at the same engine capacity. Only the engine code — stamped directly on the block — can confirm compatibility. Confusing CDAA with CDLB, for example, can make fitting impossible without modification.

Bare engine: what is included and what is not

All the blocks listed here are bare engines. Ancillaries — turbocharger, alternator, starter motor, water pump, fuel injection system — are not included and must either be transferred from the original engine or replaced separately. On the 2.0 TFSI in particular, the condition of the turbo and the lubrication circuit must be checked before refitting: a failed turbo that has contaminated the oil circuit can damage the new block. The sale is made on an exchange basis: the old block must be returned after fitting.
