Audi TT Engine: how does spirited driving affect the choice of replacement block?

The TT is a sports-oriented coupé or roadster, frequently driven hard at high revs, sometimes tuned, and whose owners think nothing of using the full rev range. This kind of use accelerates wear on the piston rings, bearings and timing components, which is why engine failures on this model tend to occur well before the mileages typically seen on a family saloon. Replacing the bare block is therefore a relatively common job on this model.

Three petrol engines, each with distinct engine codes

The range covers three engines: the 1.8 T 20V, the 1.8 TFSI and the 2.0 TFSI. These three designations cover different architectures and clearly distinct engine codes. The 1.8 T 20V corresponds to engine code APX (model years 1998 to 2006). The 1.8 TFSI is referenced under code CDAA. The 2.0 TFSI covers three codes: CDLB, CHHA and CHHB. These codes are not interchangeable: two TTs with the same engine capacity designation may carry incompatible blocks depending on the year of manufacture. The engine identification plate, which stamps the code directly onto the block, is the reference to check before placing any order.

Key points to watch on the 1.8 T 20V and the TFSI engines

The 1.8 T 20V (APX) is a turbocharged chain-driven engine known for excessive oil consumption when the valve stem seals are worn — a problem made worse by repeated hard driving. The TFSI generations (CDAA, CDLB, CHHA, CHHB) share a well-documented susceptibility to timing chain wear and oil consumption when servicing has been irregular. All engines listed here are bare engines: ancillaries, turbo, alternator and starter motor are not included and must be transferred from the old block.
