Same 2.0 TDI, two different engine codes: the Audi A4 leaves no room for guesswork

On the Audi A4, the same engine capacity can conceal several incompatible units. The 2.0 TDI is the most striking example: between 2000 and 2019, this engine was produced under codes as varied as AVF, BRE, BRD, CGLB, CAHA, CDHB or CNCD, each corresponding to a distinct architecture, power output or cylinder head generation. Mixing up an AVF (B3/B6 phase) with a CNCD (B8 phase) means ordering a part that simply won't fit. The engine code stamped on the block — usually visible at the top of the cylinder block on the gearbox side — is the only reliable starting point. The vehicle's year alone is not enough.

Diesel and petrol: four engine families, seventeen engine codes

The range covers four engine families across two lines. On the diesel side, the 2.0 TDI accounts for the bulk of the range with nine distinct references, alongside the 1.9 TDI (code AVF), the engine fitted to the first B6 generations. On the petrol side, the 2.0 TFSI (codes CAEB, CDNC, CDNB, DEUA among others) and the 1.8 TFSI (codes CABB, CABA, CDHA, CMGA) are fitted mainly to the B8 and post-B8 phases. In total, seventeen engine codes are listed, all sold as bare engines.

Key points to watch depending on the engine

On the 1.9 TDI, the rotary mechanical injection pump is a known weakness of the B6 generation; it is not included with the bare engine. On the 2.0 TDI of later generations, cylinder head cracking (particularly on codes BRE and BRD) is well documented: check the condition of the original cylinder head before deciding between a reconditioned complete unit or rebuilding the existing part. On the TFSI engines, excessive oil consumption linked to the piston rings is a systematic check point on codes CAEB and CABB. In all cases, cross-referencing the year, the exact body style (saloon, Avant, Allroad) and the engine code remains essential to avoid any ordering errors.
