Same 2.0 TDI on the A4: nine distinct engine codes, not a single universal block

The most common mistake with the Audi A4 is to think in terms of engine capacity alone. A 2.0 TDI produced between 2000 and 2019 can carry one of nine different codes: BPW, BRD, BRE, CABA, CAGB, CAHA, CGLB, CMGA or DEUA. These codes correspond to different block architectures, cylinder heads and valve train designs: an engine identified by its capacity alone is an engine incorrectly identified. The four-letter or three-character code stamped on the block is the only reliable starting point, regardless of the year or body style (B7 saloon, B8, Avant, Allroad).

Petrol: 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI, two distinct engine families

On the petrol side, two engine capacities are found on the A4. The 1.8 TFSI comes in three codes — CABB, CDHA, CDHB — which do not share the same internal design and are not interchangeable. The 2.0 TFSI covers four codes: CAEB, CDNB, CDNC, CNCD. Again, production year and power output are not enough to determine the right part: only the engine code can pinpoint the correct bare engine.

1.9 TDI: a single code, limited fitment

The 1.9 TDI appears on the A4 only under the code AVF, across a model year range that predates the 2.0 blocks. Its architecture differs fundamentally from the 2.0 TDI units that succeeded it: swapping between the two families is not possible. If your A4 is fitted with a 1.9, confirm that the code AVF is present on the engine before taking any further steps.
