On the Audi A4 2.0 TDI, ten engine codes span eleven years of production and no block is universal

Between 2004 and 2015, the A4's 2.0 TDI went through several generations of diesel blocks that share the same engine capacity but differ significantly in architecture, power output and mechanical compatibility. Identifying the correct bare engine means starting from the engine code stamped on the block, not the year or the power figure shown on the dashboard: two A4s from the same year can carry different codes depending on the trim level or market.

Ten codes, two major generation families

The codes BPW, BRC, BRD, BRE correspond to blocks from the 2004–2008 period, derived from the first variants of the 2.0 TDI on the B7 platform. The codes CABA, CAGB, CAHA, CGLB, CMGA, DEUA belong to the subsequent generations, associated primarily with the B8 platform (2008–2015). These two groups are not mechanically interchangeable: the engine mounting points, wiring connectors and associated ancillaries differ. A cross-replacement between a BRE and a CAHA, for example, involves adaptations that go well beyond a straightforward swap.

Key points to watch on the A4 2.0 TDI

BRx-series blocks are known for weaknesses in the cylinder head and cooling circuit under repeated thermal stress. The more recent CA-series codes feature changes to the timing system and emissions management that make a thorough pre-replacement diagnosis essential. In all cases, the engine is supplied as a bare engine: ancillaries, turbo, injection pump and filters are not included and must be reused or replaced separately depending on their condition.
