Audi A6 Engine: from 2004 to 2018, three generations of blocks with distinct engine codes

On the Audi A6, the 2004–2018 range spans three body generations (C6, C7 and early C8) and a succession of blocks whose engine codes vary significantly from one phase to the next. The 2.0 TDI accounts for the bulk of the references: six distinct codes appear across this period, among them BRE, BRD (C6 phase, up to 2011) and then CAHA, CAGB, CGLB, CMGA on the C7 generation. The 2.0 TFSI petrol covers three codes (CAEB, CDNB, CDNC), all belonging to the C7 (2011–2018). The 3.0 TDI is represented by the single code CRTE, a V6 block specific to the C7.

Identify your block precisely before ordering

Engine capacity alone is not enough: two A6 2.0 TDI from the same year can carry mechanically different blocks depending on the power output (136, 143 or 177 hp) and the production phase. The engine code, stamped on the block on the gearbox side, is the only reliable reference for confirming compatibility. On the 2.0 TDI C6, the BRE and BRD blocks are not compatible with the C7-generation references, which use a revised architecture. The same logic applies on the petrol side: CAEB, CDNB and CDNC share the same engine capacity but correspond to different stages of development of the four-cylinder EA888.

Two processing options available depending on the condition of your block

Engines are available on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of your own unit, depending on the condition of the original block and the availability of the relevant code. This distinction is particularly relevant for the 3.0 TDI CRTE, where stock availability is more limited than for the 2.0 TDI. All blocks are supplied as bare engines: ancillaries (turbo, injection system, alternator) are not included.
