A6 C5 in 5-speed manual, A6 C6 and C7 in 6-speed manual: two generations, two gearbox architectures

Between 1997 and 2018, the Audi A6 spanned three commercial generations that did not share the same transmissions. The C5 generation (up to 2004) is the only one to feature a 5-speed manual gearbox, fitted exclusively to the 2.5 TDI (engine codes AFB, AKN, AWX). From the C6 onwards, Audi moved to 6-speed manuals across all the diesel engines covered here: 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TDI, 2.7 TDI and 3.0 TDI. This generational step means the gearboxes are strictly non-interchangeable between the C5 and C6, even where engine capacity is the same.

Engine codes: the key to avoiding ordering mistakes

This guide covers 21 distinct engine codes (AFN, AVF, BCZ, BDG, BFC, BPP, BSG, CANA, CANC, CGKA, CGKA, CGLC, CGLD, CGLE, CGQB, CDYA, CDYC, CDUC, DFBA, AFB, AKN). For the 2.7 TDI alone, there are several codes (BPP, BSG, CANA, CANC…) corresponding to different axle ratios, engine torque outputs or production years, and therefore to different gearbox references. The same logic applies to the 3.0 TDI C7: codes CGKA, CGLC, CGLD, CGLE and CGQB cover a range of power outputs and model years running from 2011 to 2018. Mixing up two codes on the same engine block can result in a mismatch of input shafts or final drive ratios.

Key points to watch depending on the engine

The 2.5 TDI V6 (C5) is well known for oil pump and cylinder head issues that often precede mechanical failure; before ordering the gearbox, it is worth making sure the engine block is in good health, as an unresolved engine fault can quickly damage the transmission. The 2.7 TDI quattro (190 hp, engine code BPP in particular) uses a 6-speed gearbox specific to the four-wheel-drive transmission: it cannot be substituted for the front-wheel-drive version.
