14 engine variants, 4 gearbox types: what daily A3 use puts the transmission through

The Audi A3 is first and foremost a compact car subjected to intense urban and suburban use — clutches stressed in traffic jams, repeated gear changes, and occasional light towing on quattro versions. This usage profile is directly reflected in the faults recorded: the 5-speed manual gearboxes fitted to the early generations (1996–2003) reach their limits at around 150,000 to 250,000 km on 1.9 TDI diesels, while the DSG 6 units equipping the 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI accumulate symptoms of failing mechatronic units or worn differentials on vehicles that have often led hard lives. The challenge here is not finding a gearbox for an A3: it is identifying the right one from four distinct transmission families — 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7 — spread across 14 engine variants covering 1996 to 2024.

Diesel or petrol: gearbox families that do not overlap

On the diesel side, the 2.0 TDI is the most complex case: depending on the engine code (AZV, BKD, BMM, BMN for the older generation; CBAB, CBBB, CFFB, CFGB, CRBC, CRFC for post-2008 units), it can take a 6-speed manual, a DSG 6 or a DSG 7 — three solutions that are not interchangeable. The 1.6 TDI (codes CAYC, CLHA, CRKB) also spans 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and DSG 7 depending on the year. The 1.9 TDI is manual only (5 or 6 speeds depending on the code: AGR, AHF, ALH, ASV, ATD, AXR, BKC, BLS, BXE).

On the petrol side, the smaller-engined variants — 1.2 TFSI (CBZB, CJZA) and 1.6 (BGU, BSE, BSF) — never received an automatic or automated manual gearbox on the A3: manual only. At the other end of the range, the 3.2 TFSI (BDB, BMJ, BUB) is exclusively paired with the DSG 6. The 1.8 T quattro (AMK, APX, APY, BAM) and 3.2 V6 quattro (BDB, BMJ, BUB) versions exist only with a 6-speed manual. The 1.5 TFSI (DADA, DPCA), introduced on the more recent generations, offers either a 6-speed manual or a DSG 7. The DSG 7 units sold here are supplied without the mechatronic unit.

The engine code: the only reliable guide

On the A3, the year of first registration and the engine capacity alone are not enough to identify the gearbox: two 2.0 TDI A3s from the same year can carry different transmissions depending on their engine code, trim level or market of origin. The engine code — stamped on the block and visible on the registration document or manufacturer data — is the only reliable starting point for navigating the engine variants covered in this guide. EDEN BOITES covers all of these codes, from the first-generation 8L through to the 8Y models currently in production.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Audi model in stock?

We currently list 137 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Audi?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Audi?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
