The Audi A3 is primarily an urban and suburban compact — occasionally a performance car in the high-powered TFSI versions. That usage profile — frequent cold starts, clutches under strain in town, short trips that never reach operating temperature — does not have the same effect on a 5-speed manual from a first-generation 1.9 TDI as it does on a 7-speed S tronic from a recent 2.0 TDI. Manual, S tronic or DSG: the combinations are not interchangeable

Each engine has its own specific gearboxes. The 2.0 TDI — the most widely represented engine in the range — can be paired with a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed S tronic, a 7-speed S tronic or a DSG 6, depending on the engine code and the production period. The 1.6 TDI covers three variants: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and 7-speed S tronic. At the other end of the scale, the 1.2 TFSI and the 3.2 each accept only one gearbox family. The approximately forty engine codes listed in the guide (BKD, CBAB, CAYC, CDAA, CJSA, CRKB, DADA, CCZA, among others) are the only reliable reference for identifying which unit matches a given vehicle: two A3 2.0 TDI from the same year can carry gearboxes from different families depending on their engine code.

Key points to watch by transmission family

The 6-speed S tronic and DSG 6 (DQ250) fitted to the 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI are wet dual-clutch gearboxes: they handle higher torque figures more readily but remain susceptible to wear on the mechatronic unit, which is sold separately. The 7-speed S tronic (DQ200), found on the 1.4 TFSI, 1.6 TDI, 1.5 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI among others, operates dry and responds differently to short urban driving cycles. The 5-speed manuals on the 1.9 TDI and the 1.6 petrol have well-documented histories of bearing and synchromesh issues, particularly on vehicles that have accumulated high mileage under heavy load.
