A3 1.8 TFSI from 2007 to 2020: 6-speed manual or DSG 7 depending on the generation, and when rebuilding your own gearbox makes sense

Three engine codes cover the 1.8 TFSI in the A3 over this period: BYT, CDAA and CJSA. These do not correspond to the same vehicle generations and do not necessarily call for the same transmission. Before targeting a gearbox reference, the engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point: engine capacity alone points you in the right direction — it does not give you a definitive answer.

Manual or DSG 7: two families with distinct wear profiles

The 6-speed manual gearbox is fitted to the earliest-produced versions and to standard front-wheel-drive configurations. The DSG 7 dry dual-clutch (DQ200) appears on the more recent variants of the 1.8 TFSI. This automated manual gearbox is known for juddering during low-speed manoeuvres and vibrations at low speed — symptoms that more often point to wear of the dual-clutch assembly rather than an internal gearbox failure. The DSG 7 is supplied without the mechatronic unit but with a new dual clutch, which should steer the diagnosis in a different direction before you place an order.

When to opt for rebuilding your original unit

For the 6-speed manual, rebuilding the customer's own unit restores the vehicle's original gearbox — which can be decisive when the exact reference is hard to find or when the gearbox carries adaptations specific to the vehicle's drivetrain. For the DSG 7, this approach makes sense when the gearbox is mechanically sound but the mechatronic unit or the dual clutch alone is at fault: in that case, exchanging a complete gearbox would be overkill. EDEN BOITES offers both options depending on the unit in question.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Audi model in stock?

We currently list 11 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Audi?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Audi?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
