BMW diesel and petrol engines: two generations of blocks, codes that never cross

The BMW range covered here spans 1999 to 2024, across twelve models — 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6 — and falls clearly into two families: diesel and petrol. This is not a trivial distinction. BMW made a clean break, at different points depending on engine capacity, between its older block families (prefixes M47, M57, M43, N45, N52) and its more recent generations (prefixes N13, N20, N43, N47, N57, then B38, B47, B48, B37). A reconditioned engine from the wrong generation will not fit, even if the capacity and power output look identical on paper.

    Diesel: M47 / M57 versus N47 / N57 and B47

In 2.0 diesel, three families appear in this guide: the older M47D20 (codes 204D1, 204D4), the N47D20 generation (A, B, C, D) and the B47D20 / B47C20 generation (A, B). All three share the same 2.0-litre capacity yet are entirely non-interchangeable: mounting points, valve timing, engine management and ancillary components differ fundamentally. The N47 is particularly well documented for its timing chain issues on the gearbox side. In 3.0 diesel, the same logic sets the M57D30 (codes 306D2, 306D3) against the N57D30 (A, B, C), the latter covering both the xDrive30d and the M50d (code N57D30C, specific to the tri-turbo variant). The 1.5d is handled by the B37D15A, a modular three-cylinder block with no equivalent in earlier generations.

Petrol: from naturally aspirated four-cylinder to turbocharged three-cylinder

On the petrol side, the 1.9i is based on the M43B19 (194E1), a naturally aspirated block from the late 1990s with no connection to the turbocharged architectures that followed. The 1.6i comes in two variants — N13B16A and N45B16A — two distinct codes that must be verified on the block itself before placing any order. The 2.0i covers five codes (N43B20A, N20B20A, N20B20B, N20B20D, B48A20A) belonging to different generations; the B48 is the most recent block and is incompatible with N20 or N43 mountings. The 1.5i petrol (B38A15A, B38B15A) is the petrol counterpart of the B37 diesel — a modular three-cylinder architecture found on the latest 1 Series, 2 Series and X1. The 2.5i is represented by the N52B25A, a naturally aspirated straight-6, with no turbocharged equivalent in this guide. For every order, the code stamped on the block is the definitive reference: engine capacity alone is never sufficient to identify the correct part.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned BMW engine cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this BMW engine compatible with my exact model?

We offer 77 references covering the main BMW models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact engine for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original engine reconditioned in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
