Reconditioned BMW 1 Series Engine

The 2.0d in the 1 Series covers four distinct engine codes: N47D20A, N47D20B, N47D20C and N47D20D are not minor variants

This is the most common pitfall with this model: a 2.0d does not refer to a single engine. BMW developed the N47D20 family in four versions (A, B, C, D) for the 1 Series, alongside the block M47D20 (204D4), an older unit found in the earliest F20/E81/E87 models from 2004. These blocks differ in their internal architecture, thermal management and machining tolerances: an N47D20C cannot be substituted for an N47D20A. The engine code, stamped on the block itself, is the only way to ensure you order the correct part.

Petrol side: three engine families across six quoted capacities

The petrol range of the 1 Series spans four engine capacities — 1.5i, 1.6i, 2.0i and 3.0i — but is built around very different architectures. The 1.6i comes in two forms, N45B16A and N13B16A: two distinct blocks despite the same engine capacity, the N13 being a turbocharged four-cylinder while the N45 is naturally aspirated. The 2.0i covers three codes (N43B20A, N20B20A, N20B20B, N20B20D) depending on the generation and power output. The 3.0i N55B30A is a turbocharged straight-six, structurally unrelated to the four-cylinder units in the range. The 1.5i B38B15A is a three-cylinder from the B38 family, introduced towards the end of the production run.

Diesel 1.5d: the B37D15A, a three-cylinder not to be confused with the petrol B38

The 1.5d B37D15A is the diesel counterpart to BMW's modular three-cylinder. Despite sharing a common family architecture with the petrol B38B15A, it is a fully diesel block in its own right, with specific cylinder heads, injectors and piston dimensions. In this collection, engines are available either on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of the customer's own unit, depending on the engine — two technically distinct sales methods that apply to different situations. All blocks are supplied as bare engines, without ancillaries.
