On the Série 1, a single 2.0d designation covers five distinct and mutually incompatible engine codes

This is the most common pitfall with this model: the Série 1 2.0d is not a single engine. Depending on the year of production and the phase of the car, BMW fitted in succession the M47D20 (204D4), then four variants from the N47 family — N47D20A, N47D20B, N47D20C and N47D20D. These five references are not mechanically interchangeable: the geometry of the mounting points, the integrated ancillaries and the associated engine management systems all differ. Only the code stamped on the block itself — not the engine capacity or the year alone — allows you to order the correct bare engine.

Six engine variants, from very different engine families

The collection covers the full range of Série 1 engines from 2004 to 2012, in both petrol and diesel. On the petrol side, the 1.6i is available in two versions — N13B16A and N45B16A — two architecturally distinct families despite sharing the same engine capacity. The 2.0i comes in N20B20A, N20B20B, N20B20D and N43B20A; here again, the precise code determines compatibility. The 3.0i (N55B30A) and the 1.5i (B38B15A) are each represented by a single code, which simplifies identification. On the diesel side, the 1.5d (B37D15A) completes the range. All engines offered are bare engines: ancillary components are not included.

Rebuilding your own block or a replacement unit: two different approaches

Depending on the condition of your engine and your circumstances, two purchasing options are available within this collection. If your block is salvageable, having your own unit rebuilt brings it back up to standard and returns it to you — the right solution when the serial number must remain linked to the vehicle. In other cases, a reconditioned engine for direct replacement is available. In either case, always check your engine code before placing an order: it is the code, not the commercial designation, that guarantees the correct mechanical match.
