M47, N47 or B47: which 2.0d block was fitted to your Série 1, depending on its generation?

The Série 1's 2.0d was not built around a single block. The first generation (E81/E87) received the M47D20 (204D4), a 4-cylinder with a timing chain on the intake side. BMW then replaced it with the N47 family, available in four variants — N47D20A, N47D20B, N47D20C, N47D20D — differing primarily in their emissions compliance and power calibration. The F20/F21 marked the transition to the B47D20A, a modular architecture with the timing chain on the flywheel side. These three families are not interchangeable: the engine code stamped on the block is the only valid identifier for selecting the correct reference.

The N47 is well known for timing chain wear on the flywheel side, a common symptom on high-mileage vehicles. The engines listed here are bare engines.
