Tough in use, fragile in the gearbox: 5-speed manual or 6-speed manual — two very different realities

On IVECO Daily and 35C light commercials from 1999 to 2019, the gearbox is often the first component to give up, regardless of mileage. The 5-speed transmissions, common on versions fitted with the 2.8 TD engine (codes 8140.43, 8140.43C, 8140.43R, 8140.43S), suffer from premature synchroniser wear, particularly on 2nd and 3rd gear: stiff gear changes, judder on downshifts and gear-mesh noise at idle are the most common symptoms. The 6-speed gearboxes, fitted to the Multijet generations — 2.3 Multijet (F1AE0481, F1AE3481) and 3.0 Multijet (F1CE0481, F1CE0481A, F1CE0481D, F1CE0481F, F1CE0481H, F1CE3481, F1CFL411) — tend instead to develop faults in the gear-selector mechanism and excessive play at the gearbox output, both of which are made worse by intensive urban use or heavy-load operation.

Identifying the right gearbox by engine code and model

A Daily 35C can take either a 5-speed or a 6-speed gearbox depending on the year of manufacture and the engine fitted. The gross vehicle weight and body type (panel van, flatbed, tipper) are not factors: it is the engine code stamped on the block that determines the exact reference. The 2.3 Multijet and the 3.0 Multijet share the same Multijet architecture but do not use the same engine codes or the same gearboxes: confusing the two will invariably result in an incompatibility. The 70C, which appears less frequently in this range, follows the same identification rules as the 35C on the 3.0 Multijet engine.

Exchange or rebuild: two options within this range

The reconditioned gearboxes in this collection are available either on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of the customer's own unit, depending on the reference. A rebuild — where your own gearbox is reconditioned and returned to you — may be the right choice when the reference is rare or when the unit has a known service history. The choice between the two options depends on the availability of the reference and the declared condition of the original unit.
