7 Volkswagen gearbox families, each with its own documented weaknesses

Across the Volkswagen range, gearbox failures follow recurring patterns depending on the family in question. The DSG 7 dry-clutch (DQ200) is the most well-known: at low speed it produces juddering, hesitation on pull-away and harsh gear changes — symptoms commonly seen on the Golf VII, Polo and Touran with the 1.4 TSI and 1.6 TDI. The DSG 6 wet-clutch (DQ250), found notably on the 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI, is more robust but is not immune to mechatronic unit leaks as it ages. The 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes, widely used from the Golf III through to more recent versions, are most prone to differential failure, bearing race fractures and damage to reverse gear pinions — particularly on the high-torque 1.9 TDI (engine codes BKC, BLS, BXE). On the Transporter and Crafter, heavy load use accelerates synchromesh wear on the 6-speed manuals. These symptoms — a clunking noise when cold, a gear that refuses to engage, vibrations on overrun — generally point to an inevitable replacement rather than a partial repair.

Identifying the right gearbox across 23 models covered: the pitfalls to watch out for

The catalogue spans 1981 to 2024, covering 23 models from the Golf to the Transporter, including the Scirocco, Sharan and Amarok. The same engine — the 2.0 TDI for example — can be paired with very different gearboxes depending on the year, power output and model: engine codes CAAA, CAAB, CAAC, CFCA do not all share the same bellhousing or the same axle ratio. On the Polo, the 1.2 can come with a 4- or 5-speed manual depending on the generation. On the Golf, the same commercial designation 1.4 TSI covers distinct engine codes (BMY, BLG, CAXA, CAVD) that correspond to non-interchangeable gearboxes. The engine code stamped on the block — not just the engine capacity — is the only reliable reference for identifying the compatible gearbox. Gearbox references (SDJ, NZQ, LZZ, JHG among others) are stamped directly on the casing: it is this marking that should take precedence over any other indication.

DSG: what is and isn't included with the gearbox supplied

An important technical point to be aware of before placing any order: DSG 6 and DSG 7 gearboxes are sold without the mechatronic unit, but with a new dual-clutch assembly. The mechatronic unit — the electrohydraulic module responsible for a significant proportion of DSG faults — remains the customer's responsibility and must be transferred or replaced separately. This distinction determines the diagnosis that should be carried out before ordering: if the fault is mechanical in origin (clutch, gears, differential), the reconditioned exchange gearbox will resolve the problem; if it is purely electronic or hydraulic on the mechatronic side, the gearbox alone will not be sufficient.
