27 Peugeot models, from the 106 to the Traveller: why the same 1.6 HDi can take three different gearboxes

On a Peugeot, the engine capacity shown on the registration document is not enough to identify the correct gearbox. The 1.6 HDi is the best-documented example: depending on whether the engine code is 9HX (DV6ATED4), 9HW (DV6BTED4) or 9HP (DV6DTED), the power output, torque and therefore the associated gearbox all differ — and these three codes coexist across vehicles that are similar in age and appearance. The same logic applies on the petrol side with engine codes NFU (TU5JP4) and NFZ (TU5JP) on 1.4 and 1.6 units, and RFN (EW10J4) on the 2.0. The only reliable identifier is the engine code stamped on the block — not the engine capacity or the commercial name.

Manual, BMP6, 2-Tronic, ETG6: six gearbox families not to mix up

The Peugeot range covers six distinct gearbox types. 5- and 6-speed manuals are fitted to the vast majority of models, from the 106 to the Boxer, across the full 1991–2025 period. The BMP6 (6-speed automated manual) and the BMP5 are found on certain generations of the 308 and 3008, among others: these gearboxes are sold without the robotic actuator, which is a separate component. The 2-Tronic (5-speed automated manual) was fitted to several small petrol models, including the 206 and 207. The ETG6, a 6-speed automated manual introduced on the 208 and 2008, follows the same principle: sold without its actuator. Confusing a BMP6 with a visually similar 6-speed manual is a common workshop mistake; the engine code and the gearbox reference stamped on the casing are the way to tell them apart.

Light commercials and heavier vehicles: Boxer, Expert, Partner, J5 — architectures in a class of their own

The Boxer alone accounts for the largest share of the catalogue, with engines ranging from the 2.0 HDi to the 3.0 HDi and specific engine codes (4HV, 4HU, 4HG, 4HH) that share no gearbox with the passenger car range. The Expert and the Partner cover different engine codes depending on the generation, notably HN05, HN01, HNS on more recent versions. For the J5, whose production dates back to the earliest years of the catalogue, references are scarce: two gearboxes are available either on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of the original unit. Across the entire light commercial range, the registration year and the full engine code are the two essential pieces of information required before placing any order.
