17 Audi models, two fuel types, one thing in common: the turbo rarely works under the same conditions

An urban A1 runs through short cold-start cycles, with sudden temperature spikes and premature engine shut-offs that leave the turbo without residual lubrication. An A6 or Q7 used on motorways or under heavy load subjects its turbo to oil flow rates and exhaust gas temperatures in a completely different league. These differences in use directly determine how the turbo deteriorates — and the type of reference the vehicle needs. This catalogue covers 17 Audi models, from the 1.2 TFSI in the A1 and A3 to the 2.9 TFSI twin-turbo in the RS4 and RS5, including the 3.0 TDI V6 units fitted to the A6, A7, Q5, Q7 and Q8.

Petrol or diesel: distinct turbo families, different symptoms

On the petrol side, the 1.4 TFSI, 1.8 T, 1.8 TFSI and the many variants of the 2.0 TFSI (from 180 to 310 hp depending on the engine code) do not use the same turbo, even at the same engine capacity. A CAEA and a CYPA are both 2.0 TFSI units but belong to different generations and power outputs: mixing up the references leads to an incompatible fitment. Petrol turbos suffer primarily from lubrication degraded by dirty oil — blue smoke on start-up or on overrun is the most common sign. On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI with variable geometry are particularly prone to carbon build-up on the turbine vanes, often made worse by a blocked DPF or a faulty EGR circuit. A high-pitched whine combined with a gradual loss of power and the vehicle entering limp mode points to a stuck variable-geometry turbo. The 3.0 TDI units fitted to the A6, A7, Q5, Q7 and Q8 operate at significantly higher pressures and temperatures; their reconditioned turbos require precise identification by engine code (for example CRTD for the 3.0 TDI 272 hp or DHXA for the 3.0 TDI 286 hp mild hybrid), as several power variants exist on the same model.

Identifying the correct reference: engine code takes priority over engine capacity

Engine capacity alone is not enough to identify an Audi turbo. The same 2.0 TDI can be fitted with fixed or variable geometry turbos depending on its generation and power output: engine codes CAGA, CAGB, CAGC (120 to 143 hp) do not share the same references as codes CUNA, CUPA, DFMA (184 hp) or DDAA, DFCA, DFHA (190 hp quattro). The engine code, stamped on the block and visible on the vehicle registration document in field P.5, is the only reliable starting point for selecting the correct turbo — new or reconditioned — from the references in this catalogue. Before any replacement, addressing the root cause (oil quality, carbon build-up, air intake, cooling circuit) is essential to avoid damaging the newly fitted part.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
