1.6 TDI: two engine code families, CAY and CLH/CRK/DGT, with turbos that have nothing in common

On the VAG Group 1.6 TDI, the engine code is the only reliable reference point for narrowing down your search. The 1.6 TDI covers two clearly distinct code families, and moving from one to the other without checking will consistently lead to the wrong reference. The codes CAYB, CAYC, CAYD and CAYE apply to the 1.6 TDI 90 and 105 hp versions fitted to, among others, the Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Caddy, Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia. The codes CLHA, CLHB, CRKA, CRKB, CXXA, CXXB, DBKA, DDYA, DDYB, DGDA, DGDB, DGTA, DGTC, DGTD and DGTE cover a broader range, from 90 to 115 hp, and are found on the Audi A1, Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Passat, Volkswagen Caddy and Skoda Superb. Finally, the codes DCX, DCXA and DCZA apply to the 120 hp variant, found on the Volkswagen Passat and Skoda Superb. Three code groups, three distinct sets of manufacturer references.

The 105 hp trap: one output, multiple code families

An output of 105 hp is not a sufficient criterion on its own. It appears under both CAY codes and CLH or CRK codes, which do not share the same references. Some codes, such as CAYD or CAYE, even cover 75 hp and 102 hp simultaneously on other vehicles — which illustrates exactly why the stated output cannot be used as the sole starting point. The manufacturer reference — and its equivalents — must always be cross-checked against the engine code stamped on the block, and never deduced from engine capacity or advertised power alone.

Causes of failure and symptoms to identify before replacement

On the 1.6 TDI, turbo failures typically present as abnormal whistling, a noticeable loss of acceleration, or the engine entering limp mode. The bearings and CHRA are particularly sensitive to oil quality: degraded oil, a blocked feed circuit, or fouling on the EGR or DPF side all accelerate premature turbo wear. Before fitting a new turbo, it is essential to identify and address the root cause — replacing the turbo without correcting the underlying problem risks a rapid repeat failure. All turbos in this collection are brand-new turbos, sold with no old unit to return.
