BMW Turbos: reliable on the open road, vulnerable in heavy urban use

BMW turbos have a dual reputation: robust on motorways where the engine reaches a stable operating temperature, they struggle with short journeys, hot engine shut-downs without a cool-down period, and extended oil-change intervals. On the diesel units M57 and N57 (Série 3, 5, 7, X5), oil coking in the turbo feed pipe is the most well-documented cause of failure: the bearings end up starved of lubrication, resulting in a sharp whistling noise under acceleration, blue smoke from the exhaust, and, progressively, a limp-home mode. On the widely fitted N47 and B47 engines (Série 1, 2, 3, 4, X1, X3), fouling of the EGR circuit and the diesel particulate filter accelerates wear of the variable geometry. Before any replacement, it is essential to address the root cause — oil quality and condition, EGR circuit, DPF — otherwise the new or reconditioned unit will fail rapidly.

Identifying the correct reference by engine block and generation

On BMW vehicles, engine capacity and quoted power output alone are not enough to identify the correct turbo. The same 320d may be fitted with a M47D20 (204D4), an N47D20C or a B47D20A depending on the body generation and the year of first registration — three distinct turbos, none of which are interchangeable. Likewise, the 335i 3.0i receives, depending on the variant, the engine codes N54B30A, N54B30B or N55B30A, which correspond to different architectures (twin-turbo for the N54, single-turbo for the N55). The engine code stamped on the block — not just the commercial designation — is the only reliable reference to avoid ordering errors.

The petrol turbos for the N20B20 and B48B20 units (Série 2, 3, 4, 5, X3, X4, Z4) carry specific references depending on the market and power output: an X3 xDrive28i and a 528i 245 hp share the N20B20A, but other variants of the same engine carry the codes N20B20B or N26B20A. On the large twin-turbo V8 N63B44 (550i, 650i, 750i, X5 xDrive50i), the two turbos in their V-configuration are distinct and must be replaced as a pair if one fails, as the A and B references on the block correspond to two different positions.

Overview of models covered and availability new or reconditioned

The range covers fifteen BMW models, from the Série 1 to the M5, including the X1 to X6 SUVs and the Z4. Diesel units account for the majority of available references, from the 2.0d (N47, B47, M47) to the 3.0d 6-cylinder in-line (M57, N57). On the petrol side, turbos for the 2.0i (N20, B48, B46) and 3.0i (N54, N55) are available new or reconditioned on an exchange basis depending on the reference: new turbos are supplied with no unit to return, whilst reconditioned turbos are sold on an exchange basis. The manufacturer's reference (BMW eleven-digit format) or its equivalent remains the primary selection criterion to guarantee exact compatibility with your engine block.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your BMW.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my BMW?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
