SEAT Turbos: before and after the variable-geometry revisions on the 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI, the failure modes are quite different

On the variable-geometry 1.9 TDI generations — from engine codes AGR, ALH, AHF through to BJB, BKC, BLS, BXE, BXF — the well-known weak point is the seizing of the variable-geometry turbine vanes, brought on by excessively long oil-change intervals or degraded oil. The classic symptoms are a gradual loss of power, the engine dropping into limp mode, and black smoke under acceleration. On the 1.9 TDI 130 (ASZ) and 150 (ARL), bearing failure is also a common problem, caused by insufficient lubrication during cold starts. Replacing the turbo without addressing the root cause — EGR fouling, a blocked oil filter, or a degraded lubrication circuit — will lead to a rapid repeat failure.

2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI Cupra: newer families, different weaknesses

Moving to the 2.0 TDI — engine codes CKFC, CRBC, CRLB, CRMB, DCYA, DFFA, DFGA for the 110 to 150 hp versions, BMN, CBBB, CEGA, CFFA, CFFB, CFGB, CFGC, CFGD, CFJA, CFJB, CLLA, CLLB, DLUB for the 170 hp versions — the problem shifts: the electronic variable-geometry actuator becomes the sensitive component, and a blocked DPF can force soot into the intake circuit and damage the CHRA. On the 2.0 TSI Cupra (engine codes CJXA, CJXB, CJXC, CJXE, CJXG, CJXH, CYFB, DJHA, DNUA, DNUC, DNUF), the IS38 wastegate turbo operates at high boost pressures; the bearings and oil-seal integrity are the primary areas to monitor, especially on vehicles used for intensive spirited driving. A high-pitched whistle at mid-range revs and oil traces in the intercooler are the first warning signs.

Identifying the exact reference on the Leon, Ibiza, Toledo, Altea and Ateca

The range covers seven models — Leon, Ibiza, Toledo, Altea, Cordoba, Exeo and Ateca — where the same engine can correspond to several different turbo references depending on the model and year of manufacture. On the 1.9 TDI 90/105 hp, for example, engine codes AGR, ALH, AHF, AJM, ASV, ATD, AUY, AVQ, BEW, BJB, BKC, BLS, BRU, BXE, BXF, BXJ all exist within that power band yet do not all share the same turbo reference: only the engine code stamped on the block will point you to the correct part. Turbos are available new or reconditioned depending on the reference; new turbos are sold as a straightforward purchase, while reconditioned units are sold on an exchange basis.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SEAT.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SEAT?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
