On the 1.4 TSI, the 122 hp and 150 hp versions can share certain engine codes — but not necessarily the same turbo

This is the central pitfall with this engine capacity: two vehicles showing different power outputs can carry the same engine code, while two vehicles with identical power outputs can fall under distinct codes pointing to different references. The manufacturer reference — and its equivalents — therefore remains the only reliable starting point for identifying the exact turbo.

The VAG Group 1.4 TSI covers a wide spectrum here: from 122 hp up to 180 hp for the RS version, with hybrid variants at 150/156 hp in between. This engine is found across eleven distinct models — Golf, Passat, Polo, Jetta, Touran, Tiguan and Scirocco on the Volkswagen side, Ibiza on the SEAT side, and Octavia, Fabia and Rapid on the Skoda side — with very different applications depending on whether it is fitted to a city car, a family saloon or a compact SUV.

Engine code families that do not all overlap

This guide lists 28 distinct engine codes for this 1.4 TSI alone. Some codes such as CZDA or CZEA appear under several power output entries (140 hp, 150 hp), which illustrates precisely why power output alone is not enough to select the correct reference. Conversely, codes such as CAVE (RS version, 180 hp), CAXA (122 hp) or the hybrid codes CNLA, CRJA, CUKC, CXUA each correspond to a specific configuration that may point to a particular reference. Manufacturer reference prefixes also differ between generations: references beginning with 03C145… and those beginning with 04C145… or 04E145… are not interchangeable without verification.

Causes of failure and key points to check when replacing

On direct-injection turbocharged petrol engines such as the 1.4 TSI, turbo failures are frequently linked to insufficient lubrication: degraded oil, a blocked oil circuit, or too short an interval between switching the engine off and cutting the fuel supply. The classic symptoms are an abnormal whistling noise, blue smoke from the exhaust, or the vehicle entering limp mode with reduced power under load. A foreign object drawn in through the intake manifold — a frayed auxiliary belt, a fragment of hose — can also destroy the compressor wheel. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and address the root cause: replacing the turbo without first resolving an oil leak or an upstream sealing issue is simply condemning the new part to failure. All turbos listed on this page are new parts, sold as a direct sale with no requirement to return an old unit.
