Tiguan SUV: versatile use, but diesel and petrol turbos with nothing in common

The Tiguan is first and foremost a family SUV used across a wide range of journeys: loaded mountain roads, long motorway runs, repeated urban commutes. This usage profile puts direct strain on the turbo: rapid temperature spikes followed by abrupt engine shut-offs degrade bearing lubrication, while 4Motion variants sustain high engine speeds over long distances. Add to this the gradual clogging of the diesel particulate filter, which disrupts back-pressure and accelerates CHRA wear, and the conditions for premature failure are in place. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and address the root cause — oil quality, intake circuit, DPF — to avoid damaging the new part.

Five engine variants, radically different turbo architectures

The Tiguan covers two fuel families and power outputs ranging from 110 to 190 hp. On the diesel side, the 2.0 TDI 110 and 140 hp (engine codes CFFA, CFFB, CFFD, CFFE, CFHC) uses variable-geometry turbos whose OEM references — including 03L253010G, 03L253056G, 03L253056P and 54409880036 — are not interchangeable with those of the 2.0 TDI 170 and 177 hp (engine codes CBBB, CFGB, CFGC), which uses its own references such as 785448-5005S, 03L253010E and 03L253019Q. The 2.0 TDI 4Motion 190 hp (engine codes DDAA, DFCA, DFHA) forms a third distinct family, with references including 04L253124A and 53039880621. On the petrol side, the 1.4 TSI 125 hp (engine codes CMBA, CPVA, CXSA, CXSB, CZCA, CZDD) uses fixed-geometry turbos with a wastegate, whose references — 04E145704F, 04E145721E, 04E145713N, 49180-01275 among others — differ entirely from those of the 2.0 TSI (engine codes DNN, DNNA), which has its own references such as 9VA29 and 06Q145701C.

The engine code: the only reliable way to avoid a reference error

On the Tiguan, engine capacity and power output alone are not enough to identify the correct turbo: several engine codes coexist under the same commercial designation, and each code corresponds to specific OEM references. The engine code is stamped on the block; cross-referencing it with the original OEM reference printed on the fitted turbo remains the most reliable method. A single reference may cover several power outputs or several vehicles within the group, which means that a compatible equivalent reference is sometimes offered where the original part has been discontinued. All turbos in this collection are new parts, sold with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volkswagen Tiguan Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volkswagen Tiguan Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
