Petrol or diesel: which engine fits your Tiguan based on the year and engine code?

The Tiguan I (2007–2018) is split between two distinct engine families. On the diesel side, the 2.0 TDI dominates the range with four bare engine references, covering engine codes as varied as CFFB, CUAA, CCZD and BMR. On the petrol side, two engine capacities coexist: the 2.0 TSI (codes CCZA, CAWA, CAVA) and the 1.4 TSI (code DFGA). Engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct bare engine: two Tiguan 2.0 TDI models from close model years can carry blocks with entirely different internal architectures.

Critical identification points on the 2.0 TDI

The engine code, stamped on the block itself, is the only reliable way to distinguish between 2.0 TDI variants. The BMR (170 hp, found on early models) is not interchangeable with the CFFB or the CUAA, which belong to a later generation with different piston ring dimensions and cylinder heads. The Tiguan's 2.0 TDI is also known for timing chain issues and premature cam wear on certain variants — symptoms that often manifest as a knocking noise on cold starts or a gradual loss of power.

2.0 TSI and 1.4 TSI: two petrol engines with very different profiles

The Tiguan's 2.0 TSI shares its base architecture with other VAG group models, but its CAWA, CAVA and CCZA variants feature differences in cylinder head and pistons. The 1.4 TSI (DFGA) is a more recent addition to the Tiguan range, appearing only in entry-level petrol trims from 2016 onwards. This block is more compact but susceptible to oil dilution by fuel in exclusively urban use. All engines in this range are sold as bare engines, the only purchasing option available here.
