Volkswagen Caddy Engine from 2007 to 2020: three engine capacities, six engine codes, and blocks that are not interchangeable

The pitfall is real: a Caddy fitted with a 1.9 TDI and a Caddy fitted with a 2.0 TDI can both appear across the same model years, and the only reliable reference is the engine code stamped on the block — not the engine capacity shown on the registration document, not the first registration date. On this generation of Caddy, six engine codes are recorded: BLS, BMM, CAYD, CUUD, DFSB and DFSD. Two of them (DFSB and DFSD) correspond to later variants of the post-2015 2.0 TDI, which are incompatible with earlier blocks of the same engine capacity.

1.9 TDI, 1.6 TDI, 2.0 TDI: how the engine choice affects the Caddy

The 1.9 TDI (code BMM) is the entry-level engine for the 2007–2010 period: mechanical injection pump, simpler architecture, but prone to oil circuit sludging at the high mileages typical of light commercial use. The 1.6 TDI (codes BLS and CAYD) takes over from 2010 onwards; the CAYD is a revised version of the BLS with different piston ring tolerances — the two are not interchangeable, even though the engine capacity is identical. The 2.0 TDI covers the widest range (2010–2020) with three variants: CUUD, DFSB and DFSD, the latter two belonging to the EA288 family, which differs from the EA189 in terms of thermal management and bore dimensions.

Commercial use and key points to watch on these engines

The Caddy is used on short cycles and frequently loaded: the diesel engines of this generation quickly accumulate deposits in the cylinder head and oil galleries. On the 2.0 TDI EA189 (the CUUD in particular), cylinder head cracks caused by overheating are a well-known fault. Checking the engine code before placing any order is therefore essential: it can be found on a plate or directly on the casing, depending on the model year.
