Caddy diesel or petrol, 5 or 6 speeds: why two vehicles with the same engine capacity don't share the same gearbox

The most common pitfall on the Caddy involves the 2.0 TDI: at identical engine capacity, this engine can be fitted with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a DSG 6, depending on the year and, above all, the engine code — BMM, CFHC, CUUD or DFSD do not share the same gearbox architecture. The same logic applies to the 1.9 TDI (codes BJB and BLS, 5- or 6-speed manual) and the 1.6 TDI (codes CAYD and CAYE, 5-speed manual or DSG 7). Ordering without checking the engine code risks ending up with an incompatible part.

Nine engine variants, three gearbox families to tell apart

The Caddy catalogue spans the years 1996 à 2020 and nine engine variants: six diesel (1.9 SDI, 2.0 SDI, 1.9 TDI, 1.6 TDI, 2.0 TDI, 1.5) and three petrol (1.4, 1.6, 2.0). On the gearbox side, three families coexist: 5-speed manual (the most common, fitted across all petrol variants and on the SDI diesels, 1.9 TDI BJB, and early 2.0 TDI generations), 6-speed manual (1.9 TDI BLS, later 2.0 TDI, 1.5 DPCA) and DSG gearboxes — DSG 6 on the 2.0 TDI, DSG 7 on the 1.6 TDI. These last two are sold with a new dual-clutch, without the mechatronic unit.

The engine code: the only reliable reference for TDI diesels

On the petrol variants — 1.4 (BUD, CGGB), 1.6 (BGU, BSE, BSF) and 2.0 (BSX) — a 5-speed manual gearbox is standard and the risk of confusion is limited. It is on the TDI diesel side that care is essential: the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI alone account for six different engine codes across three distinct gearbox architectures. Before placing any order, locating the engine code (stamped on the block, visible on the registration document in field P5, or via a diagnostic reader) is the essential step to identifying the correct reference from the variants available on this page.
