On the Caddy, manual gearboxes dominate the entire range — the DSG remains the exception, available on just two engine variants

Nine engine variants, only one of which offers a dual-clutch automatic gearbox available in a 7-speed version: the Caddy is fundamentally a van with a manual transmission. The DSG 6 appears only on the 2.0 TDI, the DSG 7 exclusively on the 1.6 TDI. All other engine variants — 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 petrol, 1.9 SDI, 2.0, 2.0 SDI, 1.9 TDI — are fitted solely with a manual gearbox. This imbalance has a direct bearing on identification: on the majority of Caddys, the question is not manual or DSG, but 5 or 6 speeds — and above all, which engine code.

5-speed or 6-speed manual: the number of ratios does not follow engine capacity

The 6-speed gearbox is not reserved for the most powerful engines. It is fitted to the 2.0 TDI (engine codes CFHC, CUUD, BMM), the 1.9 TDI depending on the code (BLS in 6-speed, BJB in 5-speed), and the 1.5 TSI (DPCA). The 1.6 TDI (engine codes CAYD, CAYE) is fitted with either a 5-speed manual or a DSG 7, depending on specification. The petrol and SDI engines — 1.4 (BUD, CGGB), 1.6 (BGU, BSE, BSF), 2.0 (BSX), 2.0 SDI (BDJ, BST), 1.9 SDI (AEY, AYQ) — are all 5-speed manual. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable starting point for avoiding any confusion between closely related references.

DSG on the Caddy: what the gearbox includes and what it does not

The DSG 6 and DSG 7 gearboxes offered here are supplied without the mechatronic unit, but with a new dual-clutch assembly included. This is a structural consideration: the mechatronic unit is a separate electronic assembly whose failure is independent of the mechanical gearbox. On a Caddy used under load, in urban stop-start conditions, or under sustained traction, deterioration of the dual clutch typically precedes that of the mechatronic unit — and that is precisely what the part offered here addresses.
