Caddy 2.0 TDI: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual or DSG 6 — three gearboxes for the same engine

This is the classic pitfall with the Caddy: at the same engine capacity, several gearboxes coexist. Depending on the variant and year, the 2.0 TDI was fitted with either a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a DSG 6 — and these three units are not interchangeable. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable starting point: CFHC, CUUD or DPCA do not necessarily correspond to the same gearbox, even at the same power output. The 1.6 TDI illustrates the same discrepancy: codes CAYD and CAYE may match either a 5-speed manual or a DSG 7, depending on the year of production.

Diesel, petrol and SDI: a guide by engine type

The 1.9 TDI (codes BJB, BLS, BMM) covers pre-2010 generations and was available exclusively with 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes. The SDI variants — 1.9 SDI (BSX) and 2.0 SDI (BGU) — were only ever paired with a 5-speed manual. On the petrol side, the 1.6 (BSE, BSF), the 2.0 (BDJ) and the 1.4 (BUD) all retain a 5-speed manual. Only the 1.5 (CGGB) marks the move to a 6-speed manual on the most recent Caddy models.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: what the reference must specify

The dual-clutch gearboxes fitted to this range — DSG 6 for the 2.0 TDI, DSG 7 for the 1.6 TDI — are supplied with a new dual-clutch assembly, without the mechatronic unit. The exact reference of the original gearbox (found on the gearbox identification plate, not just in the service book) is essential to avoid any errors, particularly between the DSG 6 and DSG 7, which share certain external features but remain incompatible with one another.
