The first factor guiding your choice here is not engine capacity but gearbox type. On the Crafter covered by this collection (2011–2016), the 6-speed manual is available with both engines — 2.0 TDI and 2.5 TDI — whereas the Shiftmatic (6-speed automated manual gearbox) is exclusive to the 2.5 TDI. A Shiftmatic is supplied without its actuator or robot unit: this is a point to check before placing any order if the electro-hydraulic unit on your vehicle has failed. Rebuilding your own unit can make particular sense for the Shiftmatic, whose scarcity on an exchange basis can extend lead times; it is also the right approach when the gearbox carries adaptations specific to a bodywork or special-body conversion, in order to retain the original settings.

Engine codes: eight references to avoid confusion

The 2.5 TDI covers five engine codes — BJJ, BJK, BJL, BJM and CECA — which do not all correspond to the same gearbox. The 2.0 TDI from 2011 to 2016 covers three codes: CKTB, CKTC and CSLB. Engine capacity and year alone are not enough to determine the correct reference: the engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point for any identification, as two codes within the same engine family can take physically incompatible gearboxes.

On the 2.5 TDI in Shiftmatic form, failures can affect both the mechanical internals and the actuator; a preliminary diagnostic to isolate the source of the fault directly determines whether to replace the gearbox alone or to address the actuator separately. For the 2.0 TDI, the three engine codes correspond to calibration updates and sometimes differences in transmitted torque: checking the code before placing any order remains essential.
