The Passat went through three different gearboxes between 1996 and 2015, and each generational change creates a real risk of confusion when identifying the right unit.

From the B5 diesel with its 5-speed gearbox in the 1996–2000 period through to the B7 petrol fitted with the DSG 7, the Passat spans nearly twenty years of radically different transmissions. Across this range, four gearbox families coexist: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7. The generation and the engine code are the only two reliable identification keys; engine capacity alone is not enough.

Diesel: from the 1.9 TDI to the 2.0 TDI, the differences show up in the engine codes

The 1.9 TDI (codes AVB, AVF, AWX, BKC, BXE) is fitted exclusively with manual gearboxes — 5 or 6 speeds depending on the year of production. The 2.0 TDI (codes BKP, BMP, CBAB, CFFB, CFGB) offers a choice between a 6-speed manual and the DSG 6: two mechanically incompatible units for the same engine, depending on the vehicle's original configuration. The 1.6 TDI (codes CAYC, CXXB, DCXA), which appeared later on the B7, follows a different logic: either a 5-speed manual or the DSG 7. As for the 2.5 TDI (codes AFB, AKN, AYM, BCZ, BDG, BDH), it is only available with a 6-speed manual across this range.

Petrol: two TSI engines, two transmission approaches

The 1.4 TSI (codes CAXA, CDGA) is paired with a 6-speed manual. The 1.8 TSI (codes CDAA, CDAB, CJEB), on the other hand, is fitted exclusively with the DSG 7 — a dual-clutch gearbox supplied with a new dual clutch and no mechatronic unit. The naturally aspirated 1.6 (codes BSE, BSF), less common on this model, comes with a 6-speed manual. Whether you have a 1.8 TSI or a 2.0 TDI with a DSG 6, checking the engine code stamped on the block is the only way to avoid ordering the wrong unit.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 30 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
