Polo from 1981 to 2021: what proportion of engines come with an automatic or dual-clutch gearbox, and which remain exclusively manual?

Across the entire Polo catalogue spanning four decades, the vast majority of engines are offered with only a 5-speed manual — this applies to the 1.2 naturally aspirated (codes AZQ, BMD, BZG, CGPA, CGPB), the 1.2 TDI (CFWA), the 1.0 naturally aspirated (CHYA, CHYB), the 1.9 SDI (AEY, ASY), the 1.6 petrol (AEE, AFT, ARC, AUR), the 1.3, the 1.4 16V (BBY) and the 1.4 naturally aspirated in most of its variants (AUA, BBY, BKY, BUD, CGGB). These engines offer no choice whatsoever: only one gearbox family is fitted to these vehicles.

The engines that open the door to the DSG dual-clutch gearbox

Five engines are offered with, or come exclusively with, a DSG: the 1.4 TDI (AMF, BAY, BMS, BNM, BNV, BWB) can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG; the same applies to the 1.6 TDI (CAYB, CAYC), although the two codes do not share the same manual gearbox — a critical identification point. The 1.2 TSI (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC, CJZC, CJZD) is the only engine to cover three types: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG. The 1.0 TSI (CHZB, CHZC, CHZD, DKLA, DKRF) alternates between a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG. The 2.0 TSI (CZPB, DGVA, DKZ), the engine fitted to the Polo GTI, is paired exclusively with a DSG — either a 6-speed DSG or a 7-speed DSG depending on the engine code. The 1.4 TSI (CAVE) is fitted solely with the 7-speed DSG. The 1.9 TDI (ASZ, ATD, AXR, BLT) is the only diesel to offer both a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed manual, with no DSG option.

What the variety of engine codes means in practice

The engine code stamped on the block remains the decisive factor: a given engine capacity can span several generations, several power outputs and several gearbox families, with no interchangeability between them. On the 1.4 TDI, for example, AMF and BAY do not share the same internal dimensions as BWB. On the 2.0 TSI, the split between the 6-speed DSG and the 7-speed DSG depends on the exact engine code. DSG gearboxes are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch assembly: this is a key consideration for the preliminary diagnosis, particularly on the 1.4 TSI CAVE, whose 7-speed DSG is well known for mechatronic unit failures — a component that must be dealt with separately.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 100 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
