Transporter Gearbox: the weaknesses before and after 2003 are not the same

On the T4 generations (1990–2003), the 5-speed manual gearboxes paired with the 2.4 TDI and 2.5 TDI engines wear primarily through deterioration of the intermediate-gear synchromesh rings, made worse by heavy commercial use — repeated loading and frequent starts under load. The most common symptom is difficulty engaging 2nd or 3rd gear, often preceded by a dull noise when cold. On the petrol engines of the same period (2.0, 2.5 naturally aspirated, codes AAF, ACU, AET, AEU, AAB, AJA, AXA), the 5-speed manual gearbox is under less torque stress but deteriorates through oil degradation, due to lack of servicing on high-mileage vehicles.

T5 and T6: a wider range of gearbox families, and more frequent identification pitfalls

From 2003, the T5 introduced the 1.9 TDI (codes AXB, AXC, BRR, BRS) still with a 5-speed manual, then the 2.5 TDI (codes AXD, AXE, BNZ, BPC) in 5 or 6 speeds depending on power output and year. The 2.5 TDI is known for placing heavy demands on the gearbox in its most powerful versions (174 hp), which accelerates wear on the forks and bearings. The move to the T6 with the 2.0 TDI (codes CAAA, CAAB, CAAC, CFCA, CXFA, CXGA, CXHA, DJKA) makes identification more complex: depending on power output and build date, this engine is paired with either a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, or a DSG 7. The DSG 7 is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch assembly. The 1.4 TSI (CJKA, CJKB) is fitted exclusively with a DSG 7; the 2.0 TSI with a 6-speed manual. Checking the engine code and year remains essential to avoid ordering the wrong reference from the ten gearbox codes listed for this range (SDJ, NZQ, LZZ, LRS, DUJ, AFK, NYB, MQT, KUP, KCR).

Two reconditioning options available

Depending on the condition of the original unit and the engine concerned, two options are available: supply of a reconditioned gearbox, or rebuilding the customer's own unit, which is returned once the work is complete. This second option can be particularly relevant for T4 gearboxes whose references are becoming increasingly scarce on the second-hand market.
