Transporter 2.5 TDI: five speeds up to 2003, six speeds thereafter — two gearboxes for the same engine

The 2.5 TDI in the Transporter T5 covers the 2003–2009 period with four distinct engine codes: AXD, AXE, BNZ and BPC. It is not the engine capacity that determines which gearbox you receive, but the combination of engine code, power output and model year. The early AXD and AXE variants (130 hp and 174 hp) were paired with 5-speed manual gearboxes, whilst the BNZ and BPC versions, introduced mid-cycle, received the 6-speed manual. Mixing up the two families when ordering will result in an incompatible part.

The references listed within this range include in particular DUJ, AFK, KCR, GWB, EWB, KCK, EWA, KPE, KLF and KCQ. Each reference corresponds to a specific configuration; the final drive ratio, selector type and sump fixings vary from one family to the next. On the 2.5 TDI under heavy use — loaded commercial work, frequent towing — the lower-gear synchromesh rings are the first components to show signs of wear: difficult cold shifts, and baulking in 2nd or 3rd.
