Volkswagen Jetta Gearbox: from BKD to CAYC, how the engine code affects the part you need to order

On the Jetta, the engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point before searching for any gearbox. Eight codes are listed in this collection — BKD, CBEA, CFFB, CJAA for the 2.0 TDI; CAVD, CAXA for the 1.4 TSI; CAYB, CAYC for the 1.6 TDI — and each code does not necessarily correspond to the same gearbox, even where the engine capacity is identical.

2.0 TDI and 1.4 TSI: one transmission type, four or two possible codes

Both the 2.0 TDI and 1.4 TSI engines are fitted with a DSG 7 dual-clutch gearbox. On the 2.0 TDI side, the four codes BKD, CBEA, CFFB and CJAA correspond to different generations and calibrations of the block: the associated gearbox can vary accordingly, which is why relying on engine capacity alone is not sufficient. For the 1.4 TSI, codes CAVD and CAXA also cover distinct block variants. Please note: the DSG 7 supplied is delivered with a new dual-clutch assembly, without the mechatronic unit — the electrohydraulic control unit is not included and must be reused or replaced separately.

1.6 TDI CAYB / CAYC: manual or DSG 7, two transmission architectures side by side

The 1.6 TDI is the most widely represented engine in this collection. It is the only one available with both transmission types: 5-speed manual gearbox or DSG 7. Codes CAYB and CAYC denote two variants of the same 1.6 TDI block, with differences in mapping and torque that can affect exact gearbox compatibility. Checking the code before selecting the reference — RCS, PLC, MWW, MPL, MLE, LUB, LQN or LHW depending on the configuration — avoids any fitting errors.
