4 engine variants, one recurring weakness in the Jetta gearbox

On the Jetta, whether it's the 1.6 TDI, the 2.0 TDI, the 1.4 TSI or the 1.4 TSI Hybrid, the gearbox is frequently put under severe strain by heavy urban use. The 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200), fitted to virtually all of these engine variants, is well known for juddering on pull-away, hesitation during low-speed manoeuvres and harsh gear changes at low revs — symptoms that point to internal mechanical wear rather than a simple mechatronic unit fault. When these signs appear, replacement of the mechanical gearbox is necessary, as the mechatronic unit is a separate component. The 5-speed manual, available exclusively on the 1.6 TDI, has its own issues: stiff gear changes and gear noise caused by worn synchromesh rings.

Identifying the correct part using the engine code

The engine code is the only reliable reference to avoid ordering the wrong part. The 1.6 TDI uses the codes CAYB or CAYC, with gearboxes that are not interchangeable between the two. The 2.0 TDI comes in four codes — BKD, CBEA, CFFB, CJAA — and all of these variants are exclusively paired with the DSG 7. The 1.4 TSI (codes CAXA, CAVD) and the 1.4 TSI Hybrid (code CNLA) also use the DSG 7, but their internal architectures differ: a gearbox from a standard 1.4 TSI is not compatible with the hybrid version.

Two reconditioning options available

Depending on the condition and origin of the unit, two solutions are available: replacement with a reconditioned gearbox, or a full rebuild of your own gearbox which is then returned to you. This second option may be of particular technical interest when the original gearbox is specific to a less common variant, such as the 1.4 TSI Hybrid. In all cases, the DSG 7 is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch included.
